ME
I like more and/or better sometimes
Confession I like more and/or better when it comes to closes. I like to look nice, dress nice and therefore I like to shop at Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and Nordstrom Rack.
I like more and/or better when it comes to food….any food lovers in this room….I like it when comes to chocolate…I want better and more chocolate….I like it when comes to a good ribeye or delmanico…I want more of a delmanico or ribeye steak…I want it better…prime cut, medium rare.
What about you? Anybody like more and or better
Anybody like more money???
The question is more and/or better a bad desire???
IT DEPENDS, IT CAN BE
For example
If I said I want more of God: is that a bad desire?
NO
What about more people to come to know Jesus?
NO
What about a better society that honors and follows God?
NO
What about to make more money?
IT DEPENDS….sometimes it can be a bad thing for you to make less money because God has given you talents to make more in order to give more away….I have friends who make lots of $$$ who love Jesus and they are using their talents to bless the world with their talents and with the $$$ talents they give away
It is wrong for a Christian to have a better car? One well known Christian use to say “A Christian should never own a BMW”
Is this true?
NO, I know Christians who have nice cars who give 10, 20, 30% away….Rick Warren drives a Ford but lives in a super nice house…he is a reverse tither…he is a multi millionaire…he has given millions of dollars away to his church, he works for free, to AIDS, poverty
David and Solomon
If they were alive today they would be richer than Elon Musk
It was their desire for more, specifically with women for both
Proverbs 30:8–9 ESV
Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the Lord?” or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God.
We have discovered more and/or better can be a good thing
More of God
More people to know Jesus
More money
What makes more and/or better bad, wrong, or evil?
When what we want more of is more than we want God
I want more money trumps my desire of God….
How do we know if God is getting less and something else is getting more?
Test you can take
What are you thinking about most?
Where are you spending your money?
Where are you spending your time?
James 5:16 ESV
Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
Why is this so important? What you give the most to (the most more to) is what you worship
Anything else you give the most more besides God….you can have other mores…but the most more is what you worship and if the first thing is not God it will lead to destruction
Matthew 7:13–14 ESV
“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
What you give the MOST MORE
Here’s something else that’s weird but true: in the day-to-day trenches of adult life, there is actually no such thing as atheism. There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship. And the compelling reason for Jesus is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive. If you worship money and things, if they are where you tap real meaning in life, then you will never have enough, never feel you have enough. It’s the truth. Worship your body and beauty and sexual allure and you will always feel ugly. And when time and age start showing, you will die a million deaths before they finally grieve you. On one level, we all know this stuff already. It’s been codified as myths, proverbs, clichés, epigrams, parables; the skeleton of every great story. The whole trick is keeping the truth up front in daily consciousness.
Worship power, you will end up feeling weak and afraid, and you will need ever more power over others to numb you to your own fear. Worship your intellect, being seen as smart, you will end up feeling stupid, a fraud, always on the verge of being found out. But the insidious thing about these forms of worship is not that they’re evil or sinful, it’s that they’re unconscious. They are default settings.
They’re the kind of worship you just gradually slip into, day after day, getting more and more selective about what you see and how you measure value without ever being fully aware that that’s what you’re doing.
2. More and/or better if you do not have the money
Proverbs 22:7 ESV
The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.
after 10% (first fruit), paid your bills, bought your essentials (food)
not talking about a car, house, or something major breaks like a furnace
3. More and/or better is that you do not have the time for it
3rd commandment
10,080 minutes a week
If you do that hobby or extra it will steal time from your family or marriage or relationships
4. God said no to you
you have time
you have the money
it is not a sin in scripture
But God said no it is a sin
James 4:17 ESV
So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
5. If you want something that is more and/or better that is not your own
Exodus 20:17 ESV
“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”
anybody ever have neighbor jealously??? or family jealousy
New car
New phone
Spouse is not greener on the other side
they will have issues too and they will see you are not as great as they thought you once were
Sometimes what God wants for you is not to strive for more and/or better but He wants you to be content with what you have….this is not a season of more
MORE WILL MOVE YOUR HEART AWAY FROM GOD
Proverbs 30:8–9 ESV
Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the Lord?” or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God.
Some of us are in a season of contentment
Philippians 4:11–13 ESV
Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
Where is Paul writing this? In prison
Paul has had things STATUS and Money
1 Timothy 6:6–10 ESV
But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
