Observation
1. Jesus makes this 4th proclamation at 3:00pm
2. Jesus musters what physical strength He has left to make these final statements.
Psalm 22:14 “I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast;”
3. The writer, Mark records the proclamation in Aramaic and the transliteration has been maintained
Psalm 22:1 “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?”
4. For the first time in eternity, Jesus and God were separated when God turned His back on sin
Habakkuk 1:13 “You who are of purer eyes than to see evil and cannot look at wrong, why do you idly look at traitors and remain silent when the wicked swallows up the man more righteous than he?”
5. Those present misinterpreted Jesus’s words”
Mark 15:35–36 “And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.””
Application
1. At this point Jesus had endured betrayal, ridicule, abuse, and pain for 12-15 hours The Crucifixion itself had now lasted 6 Hours.
Matthew 27:34 “they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it.”
2. The will of God is unyielding
3. This proclamation was recorded so that all would “hear”
4. Righteousness and sin can not cohabitate
2 Corinthians 5:21 “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
Ephesians 2:13–16 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility.”
5. Misinterpretations will lead to confusion
