The doctrine of Divine Election has been a very difficult one to wrestle with from theologians over the centuries.
But one thing we can be sure of Divine Election is a mystery.
Most Pastors and denomination’s don’t wrestle with Divine Election because of its complexities.
We find mainly one denomination who seems to fully engage the topic which are Calvinist. But sometimes if not careful we can think ones election takes away mans free will.
The struggle is God has a predetermine program for the universe and the people in it. So how can man operate freely in a predetermined universe?
So we have two schools of thought that can come from this , one is that Gods sovereignty is absolute. In the sense we are robots with no free will and no autonomy. Or man is completely free and God has no control.
So the only that we can do is refer to the truth written to us in scripture.
We see how Israel is Gods elect.
Isaiah 45:4 NKJV
For Jacob My servant’s sake, And Israel My elect, I have even called you by your name; I have named you, though you have not known Me.
Isaiah 65:9 NKJV
I will bring forth descendants from Jacob, And from Judah an heir of My mountains; My elect shall inherit it, And My servants shall dwell there.
The word Elect also means chosen.
Zechariah 3:2 NKJV
And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?”
When you’re Gods elect no one can lay a charge against you.
Satans accusation against Joshua was possibly true in this verse. But because of the grace of God and the fact that God has chosen Jerusalem Satan couldn’t charge him.
Romans 8:33 (NKJV)
Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.
When it comes to Divine Election man is set apart for Gods divine purpose and His will.
God elect are also confident.
Ephesians 1:11 (NKJV)
In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will,
And this Election is a eternal one. He didn’t make this election in time. But it happened in Eternality. Thats how long you’ve been on the heart of God.
Election is Gods thoughtful and deliberate consideration.
Angels are Gods Elect.
1 Timothy 5:21 NKJV
I charge you before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels that you observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing with partiality.
Believers are Gods Elect.
The ones who are chosen to salvation.
Luke 18:7 NKJV
And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them?
Colossians 3:12 (NKJV)
Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering;
Colossians 3:13 NKJV
bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.
God election is always coupled with purpose and participation.
Though you are elect God is still asking you to use your free will to participate in the purpose of God.
You are the Elect of God now put on tender mercies, kindness, meekness, longersuffering,
Matthew 22:14 NKJV
“For many are called, but few are chosen.”
The difference between the called and the chosen are the ones who respond to the call.
Even though God is sovereign and in His foreknowledge He knows every decision I’m gonna make. But He doesn’t strip away our free will.
God holds us accountable though He knows the outcome of our decisions.
“In the notable instance of the crucifixion of Christ, on which the whole plan of God hinged, Pilate freely made a choice to crucify Christ and was held responsible for it. Judas Iscariot freely determined to betray Christ and was held responsible for it. Yet the choices of both Pilate and Judas were essentially God's program and were sure long before they made them.” ~ Lewis Sperry Chafer
