Teaching

Proposition: Because our flesh is weak, we must rely on the power of God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit).
We must rely on the power of God by listening to His warnings. (31-35)
Jesus warns and encourages His disciples (v. 31-32)
Jesus warns His disciples that they will fall away (v. 31 - you will all…)
But there will be grace because they will join him in Galilee (v. 32 - but after I rise…)
Both of these realities were found in Scripture
Zechariah prophesied this falling away 600 years earlier (v. 31 - I will strike the shepherd
The OT prophesied that the Savior would Suffer
Isaiah 53:3-5
The NT tells us why the savior had to suffer: Hebrews 2:10, 18
Essential Doctrine: Inerrancy refers to the belief that the Scripture is completely truthful, without any mixture of error, in all its teachings, no matter what subject it addresses.
Jesus knows where we are weak and He is able to help us, but
Our gut response is pride (v. 33-35)
We think others may fail, but I won’t (v. 33)
We make big promises to God (v. 35)
Bucket truck vs. My car - Rick warned, Casey Instructed, I smashed
We must listen to the warnings of God through Scripture, and Godly advice from others or we will fall away. When Jesus reveals our weakness through these things then…
We must rely on God by watching and praying. (v. 36-46)
Jesus has close friends who know Him well and pray for Him (v. 37 & 38)
Not everyone, a select few of trusted friends.
Don’t over share with everyone, but don’t keep it all in
share your troubles not just your feelings.
Jesus takes his anxieties and troubles before the Lord in prayer. (v. 39, 42, 44)
Three times Jesus prays and comes to the same answer: God’s will is the best thing for my life.
Jesus recognizes we want to do the right things in our Spirit, but our flesh is weak. (v. 40-41, 43)
We will be tempted
we have to watch out
We have to pray for help
Rest will come, but now we must keep watch, the hour is at hand. (v. 45-46)
We live in a fallen world - Genesis 3
Cast anxieties on Jesus He cares, watch out for the devil, God will restore
John 10:10
1 Peter 5:7-10
Dark nights of the soul in San Angelo - Crying out, ready for God to take me - I missed some of the awesomeness of that time because I was ready for my will - I prayed and watched for God’s will - I’ve been blessed beyond description: Micah, Kids, Ministry
We must watch out for temptations and pray to the Lord, because…
We must rely on Jesus by fighting in His power. (47-56)
WHEN trouble comes, we have to fight (47-53)
not in our power, you can’t fight by will power! (v. 52)
in the power of Jesus, you can have victory! (v. 53)
Elisha and the multitude - 2 Kings 6:15-18
we have no idea the power we have in the Lord
Jesus is more powerful that an huge angel army
Colossians 1:15-17
He created everything ever seen, out of nothing
He currently holds everything together
Jesus understood that we will have all the time and power we need to do God’s will. (54-56)
Ephesians 2:10 God didn’t prepare 36 hours of good works for you to do in 24 hours.
Problem: we waste time on our will and neglect God’s will
Jesus did exactly what God called Him to do. He fulfilled all of God’s will.
Christ Connection: In the garden of Eden, Adam failed to resist the serpent and chose to follow His way over God’s. In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus, the last Adam, submitted to His Father’s plan. When Jesus died on the cross, He paid the penalty for sin that we all deserve, as those born in the likeness of Adam.
