Telos: The cross brings us to a place of decision. Decision to reject, or decision to receive.
Information
The cross is rejected by other religions.
Islam rejects the notion of a sin-bearing Savior. According to the Qur’an, each one shall reap the fruit of their own deeds.Muslim mind, it is unthinkable that a major prophet of God should come to such an horrible end. Hinduism, while accepting the historicity of the death of Christ, rejects its saving significance.
Humanism, in all of its forms in contemporary selfism, rejects the notion of the cross entirely.
The cross is marginalized by liberal scholarship. In liberal thinking throughout, certainly, the last 150 years, the essence of Christianity is the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus is an exemplar.
Inspiration
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
Revelation
The Cross leads us to a point of acceptance or rejection.
Application
Why? Because…
It causes us to realize the brutality of our sin.
It causes us to realize the brutality of our sin.
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,
It reveals to us that, there was nothing we could do to save ourselves, we were without hope and without God.
It reveals to us that, there was nothing we could do to save ourselves, we were without hope and without God.
It is shallow nonsense to say God forgives us because he is love. The only ground upon which God can forgive us is the cross.
Oswald Chambers
Even though Christ is no longer on the cross, it is a continual reminder of what He did for us.
Even though Christ is no longer on the cross, it is a continual reminder of what He did for us.
And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
For the believer, it is the constant reminder of our forgiveness.
For the believer, it is the constant reminder of our forgiveness.
For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
Stretching the hand of forgiveness to our adversary. Corrie Ten Boom
Transformation
The cross is God’s truth about us, and therefore it is the only power which can make us truthful. When we know the cross we are no longer afraid of the truth.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer
3 Questions:
What is God saying to you?
What are you going to do about it?
How can I pray for you?
