2 Samuel 11:1–5 ESV

In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house. And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.”

Introduction

I want to talk to you today about being men of integrity

Godly Men who live the way God has called us to live.

and avoid the traps of life.

And I want to look at the example of David, in his moment of weakness when his integrity failed him

and I believe we can glean some practical ways in which we can live their by avoiding the same problems.

Fall

in the last 60 days, I know three different men, who have fallen and fallen hard

where their integrity was challanged

and the temptations they were presented we too great for them..

and they fell into the trap the enemy set for them..

Dont want to see

I dont want to see that happen to any of you. .

I dont want to see that happen to any more men of god..

God wants us to be men of integrity

and I wants us to take a hard look at how we can do that today..

Gods Calling

I want to remind you this morning that God hass called us brothers to be men of interigty

what does it mean to have integrity?

intergrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.

When it comes to our relationship with God..

Integrity is living the way god has called us to live

abiding by his comandments

and living christ like in our day to day life..

Broken integrity

Any diviation from the way the bible teaches us to live

is a break in integrity

expectaion

Gods expectation for his people is to be holy..

thats to have integrity before god..

1 Peter 1:15–16 ESV

but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

1 Peter 2:9 ESV

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

We are called to live in holiness..

Like God..

God calues this..

2 Samuel 22:26 (ESV)

“With the merciful you show yourself merciful;

with the blameless (Those with integrity) man you show yourself blameless;

1 Chronicles 29:17 ESV

I know, my God, that you test the heart and have pleasure in uprightness. In the uprightness of my heart I have freely offered all these things, and now I have seen your people, who are present here, offering freely and joyously to you.

This is gods expectation for us..

The enemy

But the emeny is out to destroy

he is trying to break you and your integrity

so that he can break your relationship with God..

1 Peter 5:8 ESV

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

He is seeking to devour us..

and he does so by causing breaks in our integrity

by leadsing us into traps and pit falls.

and so we to like peter said.. Be sober minded.. be watchful..

and look out for his tricks..

davids Falling

King david experienced this first hand..

in 2 samuel 11 we find the story of david and his interity failure..

where instead of acting holy..

and living in the expectation of god..

He acted in his flesh and allowed the temptation of his flesh to reign..

The bible tells us this story..

and its ending.

were not going to go through it piece by piece..

but I want to point out some of the ways david got to where he got and their consequences..

the first thing I want to point out is this..

1. David was in a place you should not have been

David was in a place he should not have been..

Psalm 1:1–2 ESV

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.

You see david should have been out with the army..

thats where the king was supposed to be..

but instead..

he neglected his duty as king and stayed home..

And he knew that..

and while he was where he shouldnt have been

temptation struck..

We cannot expect to maintain initegrity and continually put ourselve in the place of temptation..

we have to watch where we go..

what we do..

and be alert..

If you have a specific temptaion.. dont put yourself in that place..

Matthew 10:16 (ESV)

“Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

we have to be wise..

David, because he was where he wasnt supposed to be..

was tempted..

and instead of running from the temptation..

He gave in to the lust of the flesh and did what he wanted..

2. David did what he should not have done inspite of good advice

David when he saw bathsheba..

gave into temptaion..

even though it was wrong..

Advisor

One of his advisors even told him.. isnt that uriahs wife?

and he took her anyways..

because his flesh wanted what he wanted..

God is a protecter..

and in his protection of his people there is a point where he will force you admit.. Im doing this..

If you ignore the advice of those god has put around you..

If you ingore the wisdom god has put near you..

then your integrity is going to break..

David tried to Cover it up

Instead of admiting david made a mistake

and admiting his wrong..

david chose to cover up his problems..

He first tries to break the integrity of uriah..

because people with bad interity want everyone else to live like them..

so they feel good about thier problems..

and when that doesnt work..

He has uriah killed..

if were not admitant about ouor sin..

it will take us further than we want to go..

to places we dont want to be..

because it will have rule over us..

God did not let it go unnoticed

Davids sin didnt go unnoticed though..

the bible says that the prophet nathan is woken up in the night to

and told to go to david and contront him..

David paid the price

and because of this david ends up paying a price..

the son..

the product of the illicit affair

dies..

How can we be men of integrity?

Dont put yourself in situations you know are wrong..

Make sure you walk with the right people

Psalm 1:1–2 ESV

Get Rid of temptation

Matthew 5:29–30 ESV

If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

Fully Submit to God

James 4:7–10 ESV

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

Learn to resist

Learn godly ways to live

Galatians 5:16 ESV

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

I know God has called me to live holy

but ive already made a mistake..

im damaged goods..

In luck

Well your in luck..

while god sets the expectation of holiness

He is also the god of redemption and restoration..

David

Later though david and bath shebas relationship..

God will bring solomon..

and it will be solomon would will build the temple and be king..

the wisest of all time..

GOD DID NOT JUSTIFY DAVIDS ACTIONS

BUT BECAUSE DAVID WAS REPENTANT LATER..

GOD RESTORED HIM AND USED HIM..
