Summary of end of ch 9

The rest of 9- is the summary of Paul’s explanation that Jesus fulfils every role of the High Priest, and His sacrifice, His Blood is the the last and perfect sacrifice.
Lets move on to Chapter 10.

Chapter 10.

Hebrews 10:1–3NIV
The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins. But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins.
What do you think of when you think of the law?
Its interesting because verse one begins with the word gar, which the NIV does not translate.
But gar translates to since.
So what the actual Hebrew, or Greek says is since the law was only a shadow.
Which would indicate the law was never an attempt to make us righteous, which is something we have said.
But there is more.
When you think about how Paul for the last 9 chapters has made the argument that Jesus is greater, than the prophets, angels, priests and so on.
The law here would indicated all of humanities previous experience with God. The entire Old Testament.
All of it was just a shadow pointing to Jesus.
Something to think about- the law equals religion- Was the law bad? Did it serve its role? Is religion bad? does it serve its role?
YOU CAN EXPLORE THIS MORE ON YOUR OWN READING- verses 4-10. I included a lot of info in the study guide to help guide as you work through it.
Hebrews 10:11–15 NIV
Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says:
1. He does away with the Human, High Priesthood.
2. He sits with God the Father, to make the work of atonement complete.
a. Look at verse 14 again. Hebrews 10:14
Hebrews 10:14NIV
For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.
a. The word for perfect is teleioo, which means complete, perfect, or finished.
3. Jesus makes us holy. We call this being sanctified.
Which is being able to love God with our entire, mind, body and soul, as well as loving our neighbor as ourselves.
The next two verses are fascinating.
So verse 16-17
Hebrews 10:16–17 NIV
“This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.” Then he adds: “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.”
They are quotes from Jeremiah 31:33-34
Jeremiah 31:33–34 NIV
“This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the Lord. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”
Again notice who Paul says spoke this?
Not the prophet, but the Holy Spirit, and its about Jesus!
Paul says in verse 18 that because of this, there is no more need for any type of sacrifice.
Do you remember Jesus final words on the cross?
John 19:30NIV
When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
The word for finished is teleo. Remember that from earlier?
So its all done. The law, the prophets, the covenant, the priesthood, sacrifices, it has all been finished.
That is a bold claim, and would be tough for Jewish person to swallow.
How does that influence us as Christians.
Ok read the last part of the chapter at your tables. What do you see Jesus doing?
Hebrews 10:19–39 NIV
Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.” It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering. Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions. So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. For, “In just a little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay.” And, “But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back.” But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.
What did you think about the verse 19-20
Hebrews 10:19–20 NIV
Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body,
The most Holy place, or Holy of Holies was where the presence of God was.
it was separated by a curtain which was torn in two, now we get to go into God’s presence though Jesus body, His sacrifice.
