Preparation for Worship
Preparation for Worship
God of all time,
as we prepare to worship you today and this week,
help us to call to mind these events in Jesus’ life
so that we can see their significance for our present lives
and for the future you are preparing for all creation.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Call to Worship
Call to Worship
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the LORD. Hosanna in the highest!
—from Psalm 118:26, NRSV
Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem!
Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem!
Lo, your king comes to you;
triumphant and victorious is he,
humble and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
—Zechariah 9:9, NRSV
When God appeared on earth in the person of Jesus,
most of the world did not recognize him
and therefore did not worship him.
Today we ask for faith that will open our eyes
to see Jesus for who he is,
that we might worship him in truth.
People of God, behold your God!
We open our eyes to see his glory.
We open our ears to hear his wisdom.
We open our eyes to see his glory.
We open our ears to hear his wisdom.
We open our hands to offer him gifts.
We open our mouths to sing his praise.
We open our hearts to offer him our love.
He is Lord!
We open our hands to offer him gifts.
We open our mouths to sing his praise.
We open our hearts to offer him our love.
He is Lord!

Prayers of Adoration and Invocation
Prayers of Adoration and Invocation
We praise you, O God,
for your redemption of the world through Jesus Christ.
He entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph
and was proclaimed Messiah and king
by those who spread garments and branches along his way.
Just as we carry these branches,
may we follow Christ in the way of the cross that,
dying and rising with him, we may enter into your kingdom;
through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever.
******Amen.********
—The Book of Common Prayer (1979) of the Episcopal Church, USA (p. 271, alt.)
O Lord Jesus Christ, who on this day received the worship of those who hailed you as their King:
Accept our praise and adoration, our worship and love;
grant that we, who now confess you with our lips,
may never fail to give you the service of our lives,
for the honor of your holy name,
who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
one God, world without end. Amen.

Scripture Reading - Mark 11:1-11
1 And as they approached Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples, 2 and said to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here. 3 “And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ you say, ‘The Lord has need of it’; and immediately he will send it back here.”
4 And they went away and found a colt tied at the door, outside in the street; and they untied it. 5 And some of the bystanders were saying to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 6 And they spoke to them just as Jesus had told them, and they gave them permission.
7 And they brought the colt to Jesus and put their garments on it; and He sat on it. 8 And many spread their garments in the road, and others spread leafy branches, having cut them from the fields.
9 And those who went in front and those who followed were shouting: “Hosanna! BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; 10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David; Hosanna in the highest!” 11 And Jesus entered Jerusalem and came into the temple; and after looking around at everything, He left for Bethany with the twelve, since it was already late.
When you grow up in a non Christian home everything is different. You sleep in on Sundays, you go to the beach on Sundays, you play sports on Sunday. And you don't even think about church on Sundays. And the holidays are different. Thanksgiving is family and turkey. Christmas is family and gifts. Easter is chocolate bunnies and candy eggs. This is the non Christian home and sadly we've created a Christian culture that looks more like the non Christian home than the Biblical home. And that's why we need Palm Sunday. The biblical holy days let us step outside of what our culture deems as important and into the world of that which the Bible says is important. And in the biblical holy days we don't see the passive obedience of nominal Christianity but the active obedience of a prophesied Savior.
In the midst of a culture that rejects the Word of God, We preach Christ and him crucified
22 For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness,
The passive and active obedience of Jesus - the death of Jesus and the fulfillment of prophecy by Jesus
Christ fulfilling the Law
17 “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
(1) Jesus fulfilled the righteousness of the Law and the prophecies of the Prophets
9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Make a loud shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is righteous and endowed with salvation, Lowly and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a pack animal.
8 “Judah, as for you, your brothers shall praise you; Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; Your father’s sons shall bow down to you. 9 “Judah is a lion’s whelp; From the prey, my son, you have gone up. He crouches, he lies down as a lion, And as a lioness, who dares rouse him up?
10 “The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes, And to him shall be the obedience of the peoples. 11 “He ties his foal to the vine, And his donkey’s colt to the choice vine; He washes his garments in wine, And his robes in the blood of grapes.
(2) Jesus received the worship of a King
The principle in Jewish history was that no one was ever allowed to ride on the king’s horse or the king’s donkey. Only the king was allowed to ride on it. That’s why Jesus specified, “Get Me a colt that has never been ridden,” because he’s the colt prepared for the King.
Hosanna - Lord save us now
1 Now Elisha the prophet called one of the sons of the prophets and said to him, “Gird up your loins, and take this flask of oil in your hand and go to Ramoth-gilead. 2 “And you will come there and look there for Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi. And you will come in and bid him arise from among his brothers. And you will cause him to come in to an inner room. 3 “Then you will take the flask of oil and pour it on his head and say, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “I have anointed you king over Israel.”’ Then open the door and flee and do not wait.”
12 And they said, “It is a lie, declare it to us now.” And he said, “Thus and thus he said to me, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “I have anointed you king over Israel.”’” 13 Then they hurried and each man took his garment and placed it under him on the bare steps, and blew the trumpet, saying, “Jehu is king!”
(3) Jesus returned the glory to the Temple
21 And she called the boy Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel,” because the ark of God was taken and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
18 Then the glory of Yahweh departed from the threshold of the house and stood over the cherubim.
23 The glory of Yahweh went up from the midst of the city and stood over the mountain which is east of the city.
In 586 BC the glory departs
And now we see Jesus beginning in Bethany
14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
King of my life, I crown Thee now,
Thine shall the glory be;
Lest I forget Thy thorn-crowned brow,
Lead me to Calvary.
Lest I forget Gethsemane;
Lest I forget Thine agony;
Lest I forget Thy love for me,
Lead me to Calvary.
May I be willing, Lord, to bear
Daily my cross for Thee;
Even Thy cup of grief to share,
Thou hast borne all for me.
Lest I forget Gethsemane;
Lest I forget Thine agony;
Lest I forget Thy love for me,
Lead me to Calvary.
Fill me, O Lord, with Thy desire
For all that know not Thee;
Then touch my lips with holy fire,
To speak of Calvary.
Lest I forget Gethsemane;
Lest I forget Thine agony;
Lest I forget Thy love for me,
Lead me to Calvary.
Benediction
May the Lord, whose arms were spread on the cross to embrace the whole world, help us this week to take up the cross and follow him. Amen.
