Text: Matthew 26:36-46.
intro: this is where Jesus’ humanity really comes out

Vs 36

Gethsemane - at the foot of the mount of olives
his one command to the disciples

Vs 37-38

the inner circle (the transfiguration, the healing of jarius’ daughter, and here at Gethsemane)
λυπέω (26x) - to be distressed, grieved, to be in heaviness.
ἀδημονέω (3x) - to be in anxiety, to be distressed, to be in anguish.
and we know this is true because, Luke 22:44.
Hematohidrosis - under extreme physical or emotional stress, the capillaries that feed sweat glands rupture.
“my soul is sorrowful even unto death”
περίλυπος (4x) - intensely sad, exceedingly sorrowful, deeply grieved.
he felt like he was going to die
“watch with me”
be on the alert, stay awake

Vs 39

praying in a time of stress and sorrow (1 Peter 5:7)
he fell on His face
only time when Jesus did this, signifying desperation
what is he worried about?
“this cup”
a symbol of God’s wrath (Ps. 11:6, Is 51:17, Jer. 25:15-16, Rev. 14:9-10)
this is the cup that the Lord Jesus will soon drink from. the cup of God’s wrath. However this one is different from others that have occured. where as people and nations have drunk from this cup not voluntarily and because of their own sins, Jesus will drink from this cup willingly for sins that were never His.
Why He is so sorrowful.
he shows what obedience in the face of wanting a different outcome looks like. (its not sinful to pray for a different outcome to a situation. its sinful to reject God’s plan for a situation.)

Vs 40-41

he rebukes them
vs 41, watch and pray
his original command was for His sake. now its for their sake.
shows high priestly qualities.
its not like they didn't have anything to pray about
“the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak”
meaning
could be a reflection of what He is experiencing

vs 42

contrast
vs 39, asking for another way
vs 42, acceptance

Vs 43-44

contrast Jesus and peter
In the face of spiritual pressure, Jesus went to God three times, Peter denied Him three times
