John 12:12-18, Matthew 21:1-11, Isaiah 62:11, Zechariah 9:9, Mark 11:1-10, Luke 19:28-44
Welcome everyone, today we celebrate what the bible calls the Triumphal entry. We are going to look at Isaiah 62:11 first. This was written approximately 740 BC. This prophecy is fulfilled by Jesus. He rides into Jerusalem as the King of Kings. Why a donkey? This is an unlikely animal for a King to ride in on. Think about this for a moment. Kings ride on magnificent creatures. Horses, Elephants and so on, but not a donkey.
Lets look at Zechariah 9:9 now. This also states the same thing. I am sharing verse that repeat each other for a reason, which I will get to shortly. I want you to keep in mind one thing from this verse as we go forward, Humble. This will be made obvious soon.
Now, Matthew 21:1-11 sets the stage for the main point of our study, as will the last two sets of verses. Here Jesus instructs his disciples on what to look for. He is specific in what they will find and what to say if they are challenged. Mark 11:1-10 is almost exactly the same word for word. Luke 19:28-44 is also the same.
Now we will discuss Luke 19:28-44. The similarities end at verse 38. What do you know, the Pharisees tried to cause problems. (Big surprise there, right?) But Jesus spoke out against them. If the Pharisees could catch him in a trap, what more could they hope for? But once again, Jesus saw the intentions of their hearts once again.
I want us to pay special attention to verse 40. What does Jesus say in this verse that stands out to you? Hmm, I almost wish He had said, OK. Disciples be quiet. It would have been pretty cool to read that the rocks did cry out. I mean, think that the Pharisees might have finally gotten the hint then? Which is another lesson in and of itself. Ok, that's enough about that for now.
So, lets get back to the main point. What is the whole point of this study. Why did Jesus come to this world? It isn’t the obvious answer btw.
I have only one question for this study.
Why did Jesus come?
We will be answering this question in far more detail next week. But I have to know that you understand this. Because this is of utmost importance.
