What did Jesus say about sin?
Anger
You have heard that our ancestors were told…But I say…
If you are even angry with someone you are subject to judgement
If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court
if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell
If you are presenting a sacrifice at the altar and remember that someone has something against you, leave your sacrifice there at the altar. Go and be reconciled to that person
Teaching about adultery. (Matt 5:27-30)
Jesus ups the ante.
If you eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
If you hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
A result of sin is being thrown into hell. Is that what this passage is saying? What about grace? What about forgiveness?
Divorce (Matt 5:31-32)
The law says…But I say…
A man who divorces his wife, unless she has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultery. And anyone who marries a divorced woman also commits adultery
It is not okay to marry someone who has been divorced. Is that what this passage is telling us?
Vows
You have heard…But I say…
Do not make any vows!
Revenge
You have heard…But I say…
Offer…give…carry…give…don’t turn away
Love for enemies
You have heard the law that says…But I say
Love your enemies
Pray for those who persecute you
If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that?
If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else?
You are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect
