Today’s Scripture
Matthew 5:4 NET
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Bottom Line:
Joy is found in our sorrow through the life and hope Jesus provides
Reminder for believers and an invitation for those without faith.

I. Breakdown Matthew 5:4

A. Definition of "Blessed"
Not a past event God’s favor, but an ongoing state of happiness that can arise even amidst sorrow.
B. The Nature of "Comfort"
An external source of solace, not self-generated.
C. What is "Mourning"
Acknowledges loss and disappointment.Can be broader than physical death, encompassing dissatisfaction with life's realities.

II. Mourning, Life, and Dave

A. Dave's Way of Mourning
Dave was man well-versed in life’s experiences, had clear preferences and expectations, unhesitatingly expressing his likes and dislikes.
He had no problem “mourning” when expectation was disappointed by experience.
Dave was a creative that envisioned how things should be.
The struggle with the gap between vision and reality.
B. The Universality of Mourning
Aging and limitations of life.
Dave's battle with cancer as a profound source of mourning.
C. Dave's Hope
Found in Jesus, a hope that transcended suffering.

III. Jesus: From Mourning to Comfort

A. Sin the source of mourning

13 Having heard everything, I have reached this conclusion: Fear God and keep his commandments, because this is the whole duty of man.
C. Finding God in Jesus
We find a direct connection to God in Jesus Col 1:15
Colossians 1:15 NET
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation,
Jesus is the one who resolves our sin problems.
Romans 3:23–25 NET
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. 24 But they are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. 25 God publicly displayed him at his death as the mercy seat accessible through faith. This was to demonstrate his righteousness, because God in his forbearance had passed over the sins previously committed.
Not only is out sin resolved by we get a new life/purpose in Jesus

18 Because Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, to bring you to God, by being put to death in the flesh but by being made alive in the spirit.

IV. Jesus, Our Comfort That Bring’s Joy

A. He Gives Us Purpose
New identity and belonging within the eternal family of the Church.
John 1:12–13 NET
12 But to all who have received him—those who believe in his name—he has given the right to become God’s children 13 —children not born by human parents or by human desire or a husband’s decision, but by God.
B. He Shares Our Suffering
Jesus understands our pain and disappointment.His resurrection demonstrates that death is not the end.
Hebrews 4:15 NET
15 For we do not have a high priest incapable of sympathizing with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way just as we are, yet without sin.
C. He Offers Eternal Hope
Hope in ultimate restoration, where sorrow is extinguished

4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death will not exist any more—or mourning, or crying, or pain, for the former things have ceased to exist.”

Conclusion

Reiterate Matthew 5:4 - the promise of comfort is real.
Main Point: Sin will give you a reason to mourn, but you can have Jesus brings joy and comfort to our life.
Encouragement to embrace the hope that Dave knew.
Application: I invite you to find comfort and Joy in Jesus.
