Intro and tension
Ever been close to someone trapped in bad choice?
Addiction? Relationship?
you have answer | heart not in a position to hear?
So you just Sob? Cry?
Jesus finds himself in similar spot - Making way Jerusulem on donkey - Saw rejection that was about to happen - Had answer - Not ready to hear it.
So he wept.
And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.
Today - Jesus doesn’t want you to miss Him | Transformational power
Title: What is your response to the Messiah?
*prayer*
1 week from Easter | Greatest Event | Holy week.
Today - Palm Sunday |
Look at Triumphal Entry, and what our response is to the coming of Messiah.
Ed Sheeran - Response .
Today = Walk through Palm Sunday - Different responses to Jesus.
Where are we? Context
Season = Passover | Tourist Season | People come from everywhere | Over 1 mill | 256,000 lambs slaughtered.
Heaps of Prep | Roads repaired, Graves robbed - Day was 10th Nissan 33AD on their calendar. March 30.
Jesus comes up mount of olives - He asks 2 disciples to go get a donkey -
saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here.
Why Colt?
Kings rode horses in times of War.
Kings rode donkeys in times of peace.
Jesus is coming to bring Peace.
As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
Here’s a response | Those that are worshipping Jesus
Echoing Psalm 118 - Messianic Psalm - Prophesy is being fulfilled.
Pharisees turn up - Another Response | Excited - no
And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
Why stones cry out? Ok - Big brain time -
No excuse not to know the Lord.
Firstly;
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Sounds like this is happening - Then we have Daniel 9…
Daniel 9:24–25 (ESV)
“Seventy weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and to anoint a most holy place. Know therefore and understand that from the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem to the coming of an anointed one, a prince, there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again with squares and moat, but in a troubled time.
Daniel 9:26 (ESV)
And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall be cut off and shall have nothing.
70 Weeks declared | End of Sin |
Seventy Weeks = Heptad - It means set of 7 = so 70x7 = 490 years.
70 weeks in total = It then says = 7 weeks + 62 Weeks = 69 Weeks (1 week is to come later)
So from a decree until messiah comes is 483 years.
Check this out;
Decree ordered by Artaxerxes | Persion King | Can read about it in Nehemiah 2 - To rebuild Temple and wall.
Was March 5th 444bc or 1st day of Nisson (in neh 2)
So 483 years later = 173,880 - 10th of Nisson 33AD -
Before you come at me - a Year is calc 360 days (Genesis, plus all middle eastern calenders back then).
Guess what date Jesus marches into Jeruselem? 10th of nissan 33AD.
What’s the point? | 2 things = If this get fulfilled, better believe his second coming is getting fulfilled.
and;
God’s timing is exceptionally perfect
but the bigger question - With all this Prophesy, why then did the Pharisees still say no? in fact worst than that -
Jews even put this in their law.
“Blasted be the bones of those who calculate the end” - Talmud Sansedrin 97B.
Response; They didn’t want to give up their crown -
Do you have all the evidence, but you don’t want to give up your crown?
We have all this prophesy
| Expectation | Crowd screaming Hosaana | Jesus riding on a donkey and Matthew gives this little detail;
And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”
A prophet - Not the Messiah - Not the King - Troublemaker from Nazareth.
and what happens;
And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.
and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
Jesus…Wept…because did not know time of visitation.
He prophesied destruction of jerusulem | Came to Offer Peace but they chose Chaos
They…Missed it…Have you Missed the Messiah?
Don’t miss the Messaih - Don’t miss what He wants to do in and through you. Chaos was about to reign on Jeruselum - Jesus offered an alternative and offers you, an alternative.
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Peace is state of being | Get to live in because of Jesus - because of Easter | Have a real enemy trying to steal that from you.
This easter - Don’t miss the Messiah - Don’t Miss the Victory - Don’t miss the cross - Don’t miss resurrection
What’s happening?
Right here - We have 2 crowds - 2 Responses - 2 Expectations - Immense Pressure from the world.
Crowds laying down palm branches | Crowd stirred up why? Rubber about to hit the road.
If a Jew was to rise up - Rome could just wipe them all out | This tension paves way for crucifiction.
15,000 soldiers here | 1 million people | Rome Nervous | People have a choice.
Is this Messiah going to free from Oppression - Do I jump on his side - or Rome going to destroy us - Might cost us our entire life.
What they really asking - Is Jesus going to follow MY PLAN.
Two different crowds | Same information
Jesus marching toward Romans (Show picture) takes left hand turn straight into temple.
Instead of defeating foes | Straight for the Heart | Why?
Jesus didn’t come to change your external, Jesus came to change your internal.
What does Jesus see?
And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons.
2 people | Selling Livestock and money changing
This was temple courts the gentiles where allowed in - the only area.
Our final Response | Traded walking with God for ‘doing’. | Doesn’t believe “It is FINISHED”.
Trapped in Legalism.
Legalism; Any Action you do as payment for your salvation.
At the heart of legalism (of doing) is a deep fear of dealing with a heart issue.
interesting = Temple became a shortcut to the show. Walk around, no that’s the hard way. Salvation is free- but God loves you to much to leave you the same.
So what’s your heart issue?
Guilt = I’ll just do. Shame = Better do.
What’s on your table? Guilt? Shame? Condemnation? Forcing you to “do”?
Table Illustration.
He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.”
Then what did He do?
Healed the Sick, Taught - People came to him.
Come to Jesus.
Question;
What is your response to the Messiah?
Responses (Slide)
“Blessed is the Lord” Expectant?
“Rebuke your Disciples” - Don’t want to lay down your crown?
“He’s a Prophet!” - I’ll follow if you Follow my Plan
“Did not know time of visitation” - Missed it
“Flip my Tables” - Have it all
One more Response
Looked characters in Story | One that fascinates = Donkey.
It was unbroken | unbroken donkey = wants to go own way. Until Jesus came.
Maybe that’s what Jesus wants from us | To break us from us | to put to death us, so we can be resurrected with Him this Easter.
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
Worship Night Friday + Communion - Wouldn’t it be great - If we came, to put ourselves to Death as we reflect on His Death?
Don’t miss the messiah this Easter - Let him March straight into your heart - flip the tables on what ever is holding you back from a life set free by Jesus and For Jesus.
