as we pick back up in our study of Galatians, we see paul confronting the galatians about how they have so abruptly changed thier doctrine from what they were orginally taught. We see this happening alot in the modern church, people have been taught but as they become wiser they start wanting to correct everything. We see that in people who claim to be scholars, they want to correct Gods word and pervert it to match what their agenda is. Here the Galtians are doing just that, they are adding works to thier salvation. Salvation should merit good works , not works merit salvation. This warning paul gives parallels the warning he gave to the church of Corinth. 1 Corinthians 10:12 “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” we all need thgis reminder to be sure we dont fall victim to modernism in churches today.
1. The Surprise- V6
1. The Surprise- V6
Paul here states tha he marvels, the word marvel means to wonder or stand in astonishment. paul is sayin thi sin present tense like he just found out about it and in dicated at how amzed he is that they so quickly have turned away from what they have been taught
When he says they are so soon removed means that they have changed thier allegance or transferred to another. they had transfeered their allegance from Christ to another gospel. They didnt lose their salvation, but they broke fellowship by following false teachers.
From him that calleth you- god calls all of us by his grace Ephesians 2:8–9 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
To another gospel- obviously this is a false gospel that isnt based on the grace of God. By the missonaries that were there, mor than likely this was some sort of works based keeping of the law for salvation.
2. The substitute v7
2. The substitute v7
The substitution here is their false gospel. We must be careful to avoid people who wish to substitute God’ gospel of grace. Paul had ttaught the true Gospel to the galatian people and they got saved, the substitues came in and perverted it to make it fit what they were trying to accomplish.
The Mormon religion calls thier doctrin “another gospel” Scri[pture is clear that there cn be no other Gospel in the new testament by grace throught faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. The false teachers were called judaizers because they tried to add jewish ceremonial requirements to the Gospel. this is called legalism today. legalism is any attempt to mix the law and grace. The judaizer taught to gain entrance in to heaven people must fulfill the law. Fulfilling the law nullifies the teaching of grace. Paul explain later in this bookthw purpose for the law for people to see the need for God’s grace. Galatians 3:24 “Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.”
Paul is warning them of the ones who trouble you, the false teachers 2 Timothy 4:3–4 “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”
3. The Solution v8-9
3. The Solution v8-9
The Gospel. The word gospel just means good news. You can get good news from tons of different places, in Acts 13:38–39 “Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.” The Gospel is being preached there.
in verse 9 pauls repeats his warning emphasizing the seriousness of what he has already said. We cant listen to peole who try and change the Gospel, or add anything to salvation.
4. The service v 10
4. The service v 10
Paul is reminding them of who they are doing it for. their motivations , why they do what they do
Paul says for do i now… speaking about his past before his salvation. Before he was only concerned with pleasing men. Galatians 1:13–14 “For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews’ religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it: And profited in the Jews’ religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers.” we serve God not men. Our motivations are to be Christ ward not man ward.
