What do I believe God wants us to know? He is king, a good king!
Why? A good king gives us goodness and hope and a way to follow
What do I believe God wants us to do? Follow and worship the good King
Why? A good king gives us goodness and hope and a way to follow and He is worth of our praises
ME/WE
One of the greatest questions that has been asked throughout history is WHO IS KING? WHO IS IN CHARGE?
How has this question be answered throughout history? What would people say?
If we ask people in America what would we say? The president is king…..1600 Penneslvina ave
Other people will say and maybe grew up this environment…they might say sure the president is KING by as your parent I am king….and sometime this doesn’t stop when you leave the house
Others say I AM KING…I rule over my life….THIS IS AMERICA
We come to find out this is not true
Try to break a literal law and you will find out quickly you are not king
The list goes on
And then there is a even greater question that we ask
IS THIS KING GOOD? DOES HE OR SHE HAVE MY AND OUR BEST INTEREST
We have seen throughout history bad and evil kings and bad and evil kings make everything 100x worse
TENSION
Here we are on Palm Sunday where we celebrate what?
I have some GOOD NEWS, GREAT NEWS
Today on Palm Sunday we are celebrating an event called the TRIUMPAL ENTRY were JESUS GOES marching into JERUSALEM declaring for the first time HE IS KING
HE IS THE GOOD KING WHO IS GOING TO DEFEAT OUR GREATEST ENEMY, BUT IN A WAY WE MIGHT NOT EXPECT
CONTEXT WERE WE ARE 2000 YEARS AGO ON PALM SUNDAY THE JEWISH PEOPLE ARE CELEBRATING WHAT FEAST? PASSOVER
What is Passover Feast? This is the feast that celebrates the deliverance of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt.
- God delivered them from slavery.
- Pilgrimage feast, Jerusalem would be 3-4 times it size. Crowded
What was one of the major components? The Jewish people would find a lamb without blemish, a spotless lamb and they would sacrifice it for their deliverance from slavery.

IMAGINE YOU ARE IN POWER…WHAT ARE YOU THINKING??Kill him….Religious leaders and Rome….You think you are king, no I am King…this is why the Roman’s put above of Jesus’ cross “King of the Jews”

2. IMAGINE YOU ARE NOT IN POWER AND HAVE BEEN OCCUPIED AND ABUSED??? WHAT IS YOUR RESPONSE???Crown him….finally! A king has come to SAVE US….We have seen His power to heal and deliver and preach….but what kind of saving were they thinking…a military and political KING
Let’s read the story…it’s in all 4 Gospels, they are similar but each one pulls out another detail so use a couple but I primarly be in Matthew 21
Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,
saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me.
If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.”
WHAT DOES JESUS SAY WHEN THEY ARE ON THE MOUNT OF OLIVES??
GO TO THE VILLAGE AND GET ME A DONKEY
HUH???
THE DISCIPLES DIDN’T KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON…BUT THEY JUST FOLLOWED…THIS WILL PREACH
His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him.
THEY JUST TRUSTED
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them.
And tHEN THEY FIND THE DONKEY…J…they see the donkey…Jesus said immediately…we are suppose to untie…and as they are unting it the owner comes out and says
And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
And they said, “The Lord has need of it.”
THEY BRING THE DONKEY TO JESUS AND WHAT HE DO WITH THE DONKEY
They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them.
This is something significant….for the first time in scriptures Jesus is not sitting on the ground, standing or walking….
What are you doing sitting on this donkey??
HE IS GOING TO RIDE INTO JERSULAM....what!?! Jesus you need a war horse?
He’s truly not going to march in as King riding a donkey??? Donkey? That’s a common animal , Jesus needs a war horse
People are going to make fun of you, people are going to riducule you
Can you image someone marching into Washington D.C. riding a donkey saying “I am King”
Maybe some will laugh
But this what was foretold the messiah would do
Jesus is riding to symbolize He is the MESSIAH who is going to WAR but His WAR is not with ROME but with our greatest enemy
This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,
“Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”
Zech 9:9 is prophecy
HE IS A HUMBEL KING…A STRONG HUMBEL
AND ALSO WHO’S JESUS GOING TO WAR WITH???
ROME?
RELIGOUS LEADERS?
Jesus is going to war, but it is not with Rome, nor religious leaders....who is the war with?
HIS BATTLE IS NOT AGAINST FLESH AND BLOOD
THE ENEMY of SIN, DEATH, and SHAME
When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”
“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
ANNOUNCING DEATH IS GOING TO BE DEFEATED
AND HIS MARCH IN IS SETTING UP A NEW KINGDOM
HE IS SETTING UP A NEW KINGDOM, GREATER THAN THIS WORLD
And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever,
A NEW KINGDOM THAT IS ONGOING RIGHT NOW
It is at this moment people’s hope start to rise and what do they do?
WHAT DO PEOPLE DO? THEY CROWN HIM
Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

Cloaks on the road symbolized the crowd’s submission to Jesus as king (cf. 2 Kings 9:13). Branches (palms) symbolized Jewish nationalism and victory (see John 12:13). They were connected with prominent Jewish victories (e.g., 1 Macc. 13:51) and with the Festival of Tabernacles; palm motifs were common on both Jewish coinage and synagogue decoration
YOU ARE KING, YOU ARE KING, YOU ARE OUR KING
We submitting to you Jesus
We are putting our faith in you, FAITH mean we are putting our believing loyalty in you.
PALM BRANCHES ARE SIGNALLING VICTORY
Its branches are a symbol of victory
At this point you can image things escalated in Jesus life really quickly.
This group of people is shouting Hosanne, clocks, palm branches
CROWN HIM
WHEN IS JESUS DOING THIS?
The last song they would sing as they ascended to Jerusalem, A MESSIANIC SONG
Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord.
This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter through it.
I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation.
The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.
This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Save us, we pray, O Lord! O Lord, we pray, give us success!
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We bless you from the house of the Lord.
The Lord is God, and he has made his light to shine upon us. Bind the festal sacrifice with cords, up to the horns of the altar!
You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God; I will extol you.
Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!
BIND UP THE FESTIVAL SACRIFICE…who’s the sacrifice
Save us Lord, Save us Lord! Who is going to save them?
Jesus is going to save them, save beyond their greatest expectations
This crowd is rejoicing CROWN HIM, CROWN HIM
OTHER CROWD…KILL HIM
It is at this point the Pharisees are fuming mad
ONE CROWD REJOICING, ONE CROWD AS MAD AS HORNETS
As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen,
saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”
He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
REBUKE, REBUKE, they are doing the right thing and if they don’t rejoice the rocks will cry out.
It’s in the midst all this going on rejoicing, Jesus marches in as king, that we SEE how big Jesus heart is for the world.
And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it,
saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.
For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side
and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
I am coming to bring peace between God and man....
Because you did not know the time of the visitation.
You missed it
300 prophecies
You have known this was the day
you were told this day
You were to be my biggest supporters
How would they have know the exact days?
They missed the day because of what they seen and heard did not line up with what they wanted.
THEY WANTED A CONQUERING WORLDLY KING
Then he enters the city, crying and so
Then Jesus arrives in the city
And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?”
the GREATEST QUESTION of ALL TIME
WHO IS THIS MAN NAMED JESUS
Who is THIS PERSON calling HIMSELF KING
And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”
THE LAMB OF GOD WHO TAKES AWAY THE SIN OF THE WORLD
