Text: Isaiah 52:13-15
The prophecies concerning Christ’s death on the cross are many. We know that these verses here in Isaiah are speaking about our Lord, first by reading them, but also because the New Testament tells us they are. Isaiah 52:13-53:12 is quoted or referenced over 80 times in the NT.
Read: John 12:38, Matthew 8:17, Acts 8:32-35, Mark 15:28, Luke 22:37, Romans 10:16, & 1 Peter 2:24.
We began tonight in Isaiah 52 because the prophecy concerning His death begins there, and I love that before it goes into His humility it begins with Him exalted!
Is. 52:14 Tells us that Christ’s physical sufferings were so bad that He no longer looked like a man, and the people who saw Him were astonied by His appearance. When He returns to this earth the next time, they too will be astonied but in a different way...
(vs. 15 )
Zechariah 12:9–10 KJV 1900
And it shall come to pass in that day, That I will seek to destroy all the nations That come against Jerusalem. And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, The spirit of grace and of supplications: And they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, And they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, And shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.
Revelation 1:7 KJV 1900
Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
The difference is that the first time He came, He astonied a few people comparatively, but the next time He comes the whole world will be astonied when they look upon Him!
1 Peter 1:10–11 KJV 1900
Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
They did not understand the timing of God and His perfect plan. They waiting for the Messiah, only to watch Him die, watched Him raised, watched Him ascend to heaven, before one day returning as the Exalted ONE to Reign!
He was Rejected… (vs. 1-3)
The unbelief of Israel was announced long before His coming… They saw Christ, they heard Him, but they would not trust Him and believe.
John 1:11 KJV 1900
He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
John 12:37–40 KJV 1900
But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him: That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.
They rejected His word… (Is. 53:1 “Who hath believed our report?…)
The rejected His works… (Is. 53:1 “…and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?)
The prophet Isaiah warned of the hardness of heart...
Isaiah 6:9–10 KJV 1900
And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; And see ye indeed, but perceive not. Make the heart of this people fat, And make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; Lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, And understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.
The rejected His person… (Is. 53:2-3 “a man of sorrows...”)
He wasn’t born in a palace but rather in the most humble means in the little town of Bethlehem.
Micah 5:2 KJV 1900
But thou, Beth-lehem Ephratah, Though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; Whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
He didn’t grow up in Jerusalem, but in the despised town of Nazareth...
John 1:43–46 KJV 1900
The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me. Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.
He was poor, and was a servant, a carpenters son...
Mark 6:1–3 KJV 1900
And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him. And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.
His physical appearance was without beauty or comeliness that non would desire Him…
but for those that know Him, He is the fairest of all...
Psalm 45:1–5 KJV 1900
My heart is inditing a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made touching the king: My tongue is the pen of a ready writer. Thou art fairer than the children of men: Grace is poured into thy lips: Therefore God hath blessed thee for ever. Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O most mighty, With thy glory and thy majesty. And in thy majesty ride prosperously Because of truth and meekness and righteousness; And thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things. Thine arrows are sharp In the heart of the king’s enemies; Whereby the people fall under thee.
Of a truth...
Christ was despised, (not wanted and looked down upon) He was rejected (forsaken by all, His own disciples, followers, His nation, and the whole world, we esteemed him not (little value, not wanted) Yet...
Acts 10:38 KJV 1900
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
