John 19:28–30 “After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”
Observation
Jesus was aware that His death was soon approaching
Mark 9:31–32 “for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise.” But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him.”
The proclamation “I thirst” is in fulfillment of Psalm 69:21.
Psalm 69:21 “They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.”
Not in reference to the initial offering of Wine
Mark 15:23 “And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.”
Matthew 27:34 “they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it.”
The action of extending this sour wine to Jesus was not for nourishment, but to one ease His parched lips.
Psalm 22:15 “my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death.”
The word interpreted “Hyssop Branch” has been a cause for much debate due to the due to the reality of its average length.
Exodus 12:22 “Take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and touch the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin. None of you shall go out of the door of his house until the morning.”
Application
Jesus physically died
Gnostic beliefs that started to take hold toward the end of the first century was that Jesus did not physically die
John 1:29 “The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
Jesus was the fulfillment of every single Old Testament prophesy regarding the Messiah.
Jesus’ humanity can not be denied
God’s plan for redemption has always included the death of His only begotten Son.
John 7:37–39 “On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”
