The Triumphal Entry

1 And as they approached Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples,

2 and said to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here.

3 “And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ you say, ‘The Lord has need of it’; and immediately he will send it back here.”

4 And they went away and found a colt tied at the door, outside in the street; and they untied it.

5 And some of the bystanders were saying to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?”

6 And they spoke to them just as Jesus had told them, and they gave them permission.

7 And they brought the colt to Jesus and put their garments on it; and He sat on it.

8 And many spread their garments in the road, and others spread leafy branches, having cut them from the fields.

9 And those who went in front and those who followed were shouting:

“Hosanna!

BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD;

10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David;

Hosanna in the highest!”

11 And Jesus entered Jerusalem and came into the temple; and after looking around at everything, He left for Bethany with the twelve, since it was already late.

Old Testament prophesy fulfilled
Zechariah 9:9 LSB
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Make a loud shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is righteous and endowed with salvation, Lowly and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a pack animal.
Ezekiel 11:23 (LSB)
The glory of Yahweh went up from the midst of the city and stood over the mountain which is east of the city.
Textual Idea
As we will read in today’s text we will see how Mark recounts the events surrounding Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
Sermon Idea
Jesus is truly God and is worthy of praise and worship.
Interrogative
What does the proper worship of Jesus look like?
Who are we worshiping, is it Jesus of the Scriptures or the Jesus we prefer?
What “donkey” does Christ require of you?
Transition
Let us look at this narrative and its surrounding context to see how it teaches us to worship and walk before Jesus.
Psalm 118:25–29 LSB
O Yahweh, save! O Yahweh, succeed! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of Yahweh; We have blessed you from the house of Yahweh. Yahweh is God, and He has given us light; Bind the festival sacrifice with cords to the horns of the altar. You are my God, and I give thanks to You; You are my God, I exalt You. Give thanks to Yahweh, for He is good; For His lovingkindness endures forever.
Introduction
Our text is Mark 11:1-11
All four gospels include very similar accounts of this and there is a particular detail included in Likes account that is not in Marks gospel.
Marks gospel is much like an action movie or one of those graphic novels that all the kids like now.
you know the ones that are a series of pictures with a few words and dialogues to make for a rapid paced read. They are basically a book length comic strip.
many scholars suggest that the events of Mark are condensed. Whether condensed or not the
Jesus and his disciples have been making their way to Jerusalem to celebrate passover. Just before this in the action sequence style that mark is well known for from healing blind Bartemaus on the road in Jericho.
lets stop here and let me elaborate on this scene for us.
We are about to read of how Jesus enters into jerusalem as a humble servant, riding on a donkey. The next time He comes to Jerusalem it will be a much different arrival.
Before we go to Jerusalem, I want to Highlight three historical events in the incarnation that have already transpired that reveal Christ’s Divine nature.
At His birth we have Angels from heaven proclaiming to the Shepherds as we read in Lk 2.13-14
Luke 2:13–14 LSB
And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”
the next event i want us to recall is Christ’s Baptism when John submits to baptising our sinless savior. Mt3.16-17
Matthew 3:16–17 LSB
And after being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon Him, and behold, there was a voice out of the heavens saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”
At Christ’s birth His divinity is announced by angels, as we see hear at His baptism the voice of God Himself proclaims Jesus divine nature.
The Third event that precedes Jesus Triumphal enter y into jerusalem I want us to consider is the Transfiguration. MK9.7-13
Mark 9:7–13 LSB
Then a cloud formed, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is My beloved Son, listen to Him!” And all at once when they looked around, they saw no one with them anymore, except Jesus alone. And as they were coming down from the mountain, He gave them orders not to recount to anyone what they had seen, until the Son of Man rose from the dead. And they seized upon that statement, arguing with one another what rising from the dead meant. And they began asking Him, saying, “Why is it that the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” And He said to them, “Elijah does first come and restore all things. And yet how is it written of the Son of Man that He will suffer many things and be treated with contempt? “But I say to you that Elijah has indeed come, and they did to him whatever they wished, just as it is written of him.”
Coclusion

Have this way of thinking in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,

6 who, although existing in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,

7 but aemptied Himself, by taking the form of a slave, by being made in the likeness of men.

8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

9 Therefore, God also highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,

10 so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

11 and that EVERY TONGUE WILL CONFESS that Jesus Christ is bLORD, to the glory of God the Father.

12 So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling;

13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.

ADDITIONAL VERESES

18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away;

Notes:
Jesus foretells His death: MK10.32-34
Mark 10:32–34 LSB
And they were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking on ahead of them; and they were amazed, and those who followed were fearful. And again He took the twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him: “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will deliver Him over to the Gentiles. “And they will mock Him and spit on Him, and flog Him and kill Him, and three days later He will rise again.”
and Mk 9.30-33
Mark 9:30–33 LSB
From there they went out and were going through Galilee, and He was not wanting anyone to know about it. For He was teaching His disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him; and when He has been killed, He will rise again three days later.” But they did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask Him. And they came to Capernaum; and when He was in the house, He began to question them, “What were you discussing on the way?”
and to his disciples after Peters confession (Mk 8.27-31)
And He told a gathered crowd in vs. 34 that those who wish to follow Him must take up their cross, explicitly foretelling them how He would be sacrificed.
John 15:13 LSB
“Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.
1 Corinthians 6:19 LSB
Or do you not know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?
cleanse the temple of your soul
Romans 5:6–8 LSB
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous man, though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
