If the World Hates You
Notes

“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.
If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also.
But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me.
If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.
He who hates Me hates My Father also.
If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father.
But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’
“But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.
And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.

I. SUFFERING (15:18–25)
I. SUFFERING (15:18–25)
A. The facts (15:18–24)
1. All Christians will be hated because Christ was hated (15:18–19).
“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.
If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
John (C. Antagonism in the World (15:18–27))
The world hates Christians because of their link with the Lord. We could say that persecution comes because of separation
(Christians are not a part of the world; they belong to the Savior), and proclamation (Christians, like their Lord, speak the truth about sin).
Satan dominates the evil world system in rebellion against God, and thus the world hates Jesus and those of us who follow Him.
Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
God’s children are different than those of the world
We are set apart by GOD
We should be spiritually minded
Our drive and ambitions to glorify God flies in the face of their sensibilities
By living for Jesus, our lives shine forth the glory of God and they hate it!
WHY?
They are living for themselves
Carnally minding
They are guilty of ignoring the Lord and want no reminder of Him
2. No servant is greater than his master (15:20–21).
Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also.
But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me.
They are against our Lord, Jesus, they will be against us
We are inseparably connected to Him
We are less powerful and known than Jesus
But on a local level, it is easier to attack us, the weaker target, than to take on God
The worldview battle ongoing around us in hearts and minds
Instead of considering repentance and living God’s way, they fight back and often we are the ones who feel it.
But make no mistake, it is the Lord they are fighting
They hated Him, they will hate us for HIS sake.
Hatred against Christians who have a Biblical worldview is one of the last “hates” tolerated.
persecution
Persecution for righteousness’ sake is what every child of God must expect.
Charles Simeon
3. The reason for this hatred is Jesus’ fearless preaching against sin (15:22–24).
If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.
He who hates Me hates My Father also.
If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father.
We, as we proclaim Christ’s word, are enemies with the world
The gospel is made necessary do to our sins
All have sinned
We will all 100% be guilty of sinning
Preaching the gospel makes the listener confront their sin
Not pleasant to hear
BUT necessary
For the next thing is “God so loved”
God sent His Son, Jesus, to atone for our sins
B. The foretelling (15:25):
But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’
All this is predicted in Psalms 35:19 and 69:4.
Let them not rejoice over me who are wrongfully my enemies; Nor let them wink with the eye who hate me without a cause.
Those who hate me without a cause Are more than the hairs of my head; They are mighty who would destroy me, Being my enemies wrongfully; Though I have stolen nothing, I still must restore it.
Jesus persecution and our own where expected by God
Rejecting Jesus is the greatest sin
This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”
The pharisees knew He was from God and rejected him
II. WITNESSING (15:26–27):
II. WITNESSING (15:26–27):
Jesus speaks of a twofold witness.
A. The Holy Spirit will soon witness to the disciples concerning the Savior (15:26).
“But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.
jesus again discusses the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is identified using the Greek word "parakletos".
1. KJV - "Comforter"
2. NKJV - "Helper"
3. NIV - "Counselor"
4. Others - "Friend", "Advocate"
The Greek word literally means, "one called alongside to help."
It speaks of someone who is called alongside someone else to offer comfort, advice, strength, and instruction, and to plead their case (or intercede) before a judge, when needed.
The Spirit of truth, the HS will testify of Christ
He convicts us and convinces us of the truth of God’s word
In our hearts, the Spirit bears witness to our souls
From that foundation....
B. The disciples should then witness to the world concerning the Savior (15:27).
And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
IL: A teenaged girl who was taking First Aid lessons burst through the door of her home and said, "Mom, I just saw a horrible accident and I was able to use my First Aid Training!" "What did you do?" her mother asked. "Well, when I arrived on the scene, I saw one man with a broken leg, a woman who was bleeding from the head, and two children who were both unconscious." "So what did you do?" asked her mother. The young girl replied, "I sat down on the curb and put my head between my knees so I wouldn’t pass out."
We don’t have the gospel to hide it!
Empowered with the Holy Spirit’s conviction, Jesus disciples will witness
They will proclaim thee gospel!
A. The word translated "bear witness" is the exact same word translated "testify" in verse 26.
B. Further, the word is in the "present, active imperative" tense, meaning that this is something you must do now and continue to do, as an act of obedience.
C. The disciples were the most logical choice for testifying, since they had been with Christ from the beginning.
This is one of the requirements to be an Apostle as discussed in Acts 1
D. But they are long gone.
Now, it is those of us who walk with Jesus daily who have the responsibility to testify.
The Book of Hebrews tells us that we are "surrounded by a cloud of witnesses" who are watching us and cheering us on in our service for Christ. (Heb. 12:1)
E. How sad that people , day in and day out, Christians don’t seem to care that the Gospel torch gets dropped.
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Perhaps He tied the 2 together because witnessing will lead to persecution
When faced with the reality of their sin, instead of repenting, they attack the witness.
Never, for fear of feeble man, restrain your witness.
Charles Spurgeon
Conclusion:
Conclusion:
With regard to testifying (or witnessing), I read recently that there are 4 kinds of Christians:
Those who don’t know they’re supposed to testify. (Very rare.)
Those who know they’re supposed to testify but don’t know how. (Very common.)
Those who know they’re supposed to testify, know how to testify, but don’t. (Very common.)
Those who know they’re supposed to testify, know how to testify, and are doing a good job. (Very rare.)
May we all grow in our faith and obedience to be the 4th
