Children’s Message

The Crowd’s Coronation (Matthew 21:1-11)

Zechariah 9:9 NASB95
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Passover Expectations - The remembrance of God redeeming Israel from slavery in Egypt and a foreshadowing of God’s future deliverance.
Roughly 2.5 million pilgrims traveled to Jerusalem. One of three required feasts that all were to go to Jerusalem to celebrate.
Maybe this is the year Elijah comes! - At the Passover meal they would have an empty seat set aside for the Prophet Elijah.
Malachi 4:5 NASB95
“Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord.
Maybe this is the year that the prophet like Moses comes! They were also anticipating the return of one like Moses in conjunction with the Messiah.
Deuteronomy 18:15 NASB95
“The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him.
Maybe this the year the Messiah comes to save us!
John 1:19–21 NASB95
This is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”
Security was beefed up in Jerusalem at the Passover for fear of this Messiah actually arriving and bringing a revolt…Zealots
Victorious…To save, help, deliver, defend; Bringing to a place of safety or broad pasture (Psalm 23)
From Psalm 118:25-26
Deliverance from tribulation, rescue from enemies, victory in war, protective duty of a shepherd, avenging of wrongs, compassionate aid in time of need, salvation from God.
Palms were the recognized symbol of the Jewish state. Like a flag.
The Cry, “Hosanna!” - Literally, “Give salvation now!”
The King
Son of David - stresses the kingly role Messiah was to play.
2 Samuel 7:8–9 NASB95
“Now therefore, thus you shall say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, “I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people Israel. “I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a great name, like the names of the great men who are on the earth.
2 Samuel 7:10–11 NASB95
“I will also appoint a place for My people Israel and will plant them, that they may live in their own place and not be disturbed again, nor will the wicked afflict them any more as formerly, even from the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. The Lord also declares to you that the Lord will make a house for you.
2 Samuel 7:16 NASB95
“Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.” ’ ”
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord
Luke 19:38 NASB95
shouting: “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
Hosanna in the Highest - Glory to God in the highest!
An emphasis in the recognition that God had finally sent the Deliverer, the Messiah.
John 6:15 NASB95
So Jesus, perceiving that they were intending to come and take Him by force to make Him king, withdrew again to the mountain by Himself alone.
Their Messianic expectation was finally being fulfilled.

The Roman Soldier’s Coronation (John 19:1-5)

Crown of Thorns and A Purple Robe
Irony - the word used for crown here is stephanos which is the crown given to the victor in the games, and figuratively was a symbol of the reward of eternal life, or the laurel wreath worn by the emperor.
‌Gold at birth - King...
Purple - the color of royalty
Hail, King of the Jews!
Mocking instead of praise
Slaps instead of kisses
Behold the Man!
Could be Pilate’s derogatory mocking of Jesus. Look at this frail, weak, whipped, pathetic figure.
‌You claim He claims to be God, but look...He’s just a mere mortal…
‌Sure He’s got a crown and robe, but seriously, does this look like a King?
‌But, Jesus’ favorite term for Himself was the Son of Man.
Daniel 7:13–14 NASB95
“I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was presented before Him. “And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations and men of every language Might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion Which will not pass away; And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed.
The suffering servant in whom God delights.

A Criminal’s Condemnation (John 19:6-16)

Crucify! Crucify! To the Cross! To the Cross!
Death Penalty For Claiming To Be Deity (Judaism) (vs. 7)
We have no king but Caesar…What about David? What about God?
A little irony here. The Jewish leaders were accusing Jesus of blasphemy and yet by their claim they are blaspheming God.
Death Penalty For Attempting To Usurp The Caesar (political) (vs. 12)
Caesar was both king and a god to the Romans
The Jews trump card - Threatening Pilate with treason.
Any governor releasing a prisoner claiming to be a king would without question be guilty of treason against the emperor.
Not to condemn Jesus would be political suicide. And Pilate was already on the hot seat with the emperor.

The Curse Of The Cross (John 19:16-24)

Deuteronomy 21:22–23 NASB95
“If a man has committed a sin worthy of death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, his corpse shall not hang all night on the tree, but you shall surely bury him on the same day (for he who is hanged is accursed of God), so that you do not defile your land which the Lord your God gives you as an inheritance.
Matthew 27:46 NASB95
About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
The cross was such a heinous penalty that it was not given to Roman citizens.
With few exceptions it was used only for the execution of slaves, foreigners, and robbers.

The Cry of the Cursed (John 19:28-29)

“I Thirst” - a desire for restored relationship to the Father.
Psalm 42:2 NIV84
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?
Crown of Thorns: What was the curse on the ground? Jesus takes the curse of the ground upon Himself.

Pilate’s Coronation (John 19:13-22)

Behold, your King!
Jesus hung on the cross in the middle – The privileged position
Sometimes the leader of the “gang” would hang in the middle and his accomplices would hang on either side.
As such, Jesus even in His death is playing the role of judge.
One criminal repents and is granted what he doesn’t deserve (grace) eternal life, the other rejects and is granted what he does deserve.
Luke 23:34 NIV84
Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
The one who repents acknowledges Jesus as King.
Luke 23:42 NIV84
Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
We like Jesus’ fellow victims cannot escape the cross; we can only decide on which one we wish to die.
The Inscription On The Cross
Written in Hebrew (Jews), Latin (official language of the Roman state), and Greek (the common language of the civilized world)
All would be able to read it
John then brings attention to the universal sacrifice of Christ for all.
Normally, the crimesof the condemned were placed on the placard that was nailed above the head of the condemned. It may have been hung from the neck of Jesus as he carried his cross through the streets of Jerusalem on the way to Golgotha.
This was symbolic of carrying the sins of the world on the cross.

The Cry of the King (John 19:30)

“It Is Finished!”
The curse has been taken away.
Galatians 3:13–14 NASB95
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”— in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Paid In Full– Redeemed
Be Blessed– No more curse
Be Filled– Indwelling of the Holy Spirit
The power and authority Satan had over us has been taken away
Hebrews 2:14 NASB95
Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,
Colossians 2:13–15 NASB95
When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him.
Alive - Death canceled. Brought from death to life. Death no longer has power over us. Satan’s goal.
Forgiven – Debts/Crimes canceled. Sin no longer has power over us. . note the inscription of “crimes” on the cross – Our crimes were written onto His placard. Satan’s accusations
Faith - Written code canceled. Favor with God not based on our works, The Law no longer has power over us. Satan’s weapon.
The works of the devil are being destroyed.
1 John 3:8 NASB95
the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.

THE Reign Of The King

He Sat Down.
Hebrews 1:3 NASB95
And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
He Rules
1 Corinthians 15:25–26 NASB95
For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be abolished is death.
Final Judgment
1 Corinthians 15:22–24 NASB95
For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, after that those who are Christ’s at His coming, then comes the end, when He hands over the kingdom to the God and Father, when He has abolished all rule and all authority and power.
The fifth cup?...
cup 5 - I will bring you into the Land: the cup of Elijah
left undrunk at the Seder meal as something to be fulfilled.
heralding the final and ultimate redemption
The complete deliverance of God’s people from the wages of sin.
God’s wrath on the nations. Drive the wickedness out of the land and then take possession of it.
Take this cup from me.
Not my will, but thine be done.
Revelation 15:1 NASB95
Then I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvelous, seven angels who had seven plagues, which are the last, because in them the wrath of God is finished.
Revelation 16:17 NASB95
Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl upon the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple from the throne, saying, “It is done.”
Revelation 19:16 NASB95
And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
Final Eternal Reign
Isaiah 9:6–7 NASB95
For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.
Revelation 21:5–6 NASB95
And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.” Then He said to me, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost.
