“Palm Sunday - Power in Love”
welcome
Talk about this weeks msg on Power
lets read our passage we’ve found ourselves in the past three weeks
Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.
talk about series/Recap = wealth comfort and control
today we talk about power…
when we think of power we can think of many things…
super powers
power in strength
political power
religious power
military power
and maybe even power of love
lets read our passage for today…
read passage
The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,
“Fear not, daughter of Zion;
behold, your king is coming,
sitting on a donkey’s colt!”
His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him.
the feast is passover so a lot of people are there in Jerusalem for passover these have already heard and seen what Jesus has been doing and saying so they are happy to see him = but also happy cause they were excited for a
Military force or power to dethrone their oppressors
palm branches were a symbol of victory
ekraugazon Hb. (Shout, Scream, Shout of Praise)
ὡσαννά Gk. (Hosanna) Please save or save now…
and jesus entering in, fulfilling Zachariah's prophecy further pushed that belief
talk about passage and about what it meant and how it relates to power…
talk about what everyone thought the entry of the messiah would actually mean the kind of power it would bring
lets continue on…
So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”
After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him.
Lets hold here real quick
now we see two different powers at play…
whats happening? Jesus is before pilot but before he came before pilot he went before the religious leaders in the Sanhedrin and Pharisees
“The Sanhedrin had condemned Jesus for blasphemy”… heres the irony of it is they breaking religious law here…they were technically working during passover…thats a no no…
Preach it…
but hold on cause we see another power the Sanhedrin wanted to sentence jesus to death but had not the power to be able to do so the other symbolism here is Jesus needed to be crucified…
So they told Rome that Jesus was now against their power…political power…
Preach on this (Lord help me remember)
so we have seen military power, religious power, political power…
but there is another power at play that is about to go down…
you see this next story i believe is included for a reason…
bible is inspired by and lead by God = every letter and word and sentence is there for a reason…nothing is there by coincidence
in concluding here today
But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.
Let all that you do be done in love.
And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
this is the power of true genuine God love…
Preach it please lord please help me
HOLY SPIRIT TAKE OVER…
