Psalm 119:21–24 NKJV
21 You rebuke the proud—the cursed, Who stray from Your commandments. 22 Remove from me reproach and contempt, For I have kept Your testimonies. 23 Princes also sit and speak against me, But Your servant meditates on Your statutes. 24 Your testimonies also are my delight And my counselors.
Have A Word Of PRAYER!
Confession of Faith
I am not moved by what I see or by what I feel. I am moved by what I believe. I believe the WORD of God! The victory is mine! I have it now! I can see it through the eyes of my faith! In Jesus Name!
Introduction:
Today makes me think of how rich and deep this life journey is and will continue to be. During our time here on this side of heaven, each one of us e been through many life seasons, with both valleys of struggle and peaks of victory. Even with all the twists and turns - the ups and downs When we look back over our life - hows does the song go - I won’t complain!
I have so, much to thank God for, There is some much to to grateful for knowing that one thing will always remain the same and that we can stand in God’s faithfulness! When we look at the text it challenges us, or invites us to look deeper into the truth of the words of this psalm!. When we read and hear the lyrics in this psalm we will ind that God is using the psalmist to give us some advice! Now - I need you to give that extra attention, because there are times in this text God is given the word to us quietly, almost like someone is whispering to you and you literally have to read their lips to understand! As life gets more complicated, we often have to deal with a lot of problems, from health issues to family problems, from job changes to figuring out how to be in a relationship. In the middle of it all, though, we are told to be humble before our holy God. This is a call to put our pride, goals, and wants at the feet of the One who holds everything together. So, let's lean in with expectation! God draw near to us as we draw near to you.
The psalmist writes in verse 21
Psalm 119:21 NLT
21 You rebuke the arrogant; those who wander from your commands are cursed.
He said you rebuke the arrogant! Here is some advice - We must watch ourselves as Christ follower and not get so arrogant in our character, do not get prideful in our abilities, self centered in our relationships!
The term "rebuke" is like a strong reprimand or strong correction intended to bring us back into alignment with God's standards and will.
When God rebukes us - It signifies God's displeasure with our behavior or a behavior that goes against His commandments and His desire for His people! Remember we must live our lives in obedience and righteousness.
Why would a loving God rebuke me or you! First of all, because he loves us and he knows whats better for us! When his children display prideful attitudes, when God’s children have a disregard for God's authority, or when God’s children have a lack of reverence for His commandments. The qualifies for a rebuke from God!
When God’s children are dishonest, when we operate in selfishness, or when we are unfaithfulness in our relationships. Those things qualify for a rebuke from God! When you prioritize worldly pursuits over spiritual growth and obedience to God's Word those things may get you a rebuke from God
As Christ followers, as Christians as believers, we are called to humble ourselves before God and submit to His will. We gotta work, to align and keep our lives align with his Word!
Know this when God say’s he needs to bring you back in line that is an expression of His love and an expression of his desire for our spiritual growth and well-being.
Through repentance and obedience, we can experience restoration and reconciliation with God, then we can position ourselves to receive His blessings and favor in our lives.
Just because we missed the mark and we go through God’s rebuke does not mean he don’t love us! That would be like a parent who corrects a child, that doesn't mean the parent doesn’t love the kid - the kid just need to get it back together!
Proverbs 16:18 NKJV
18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.
This proverb gets to the heart of the matter quickly: pride always ends in disaster. "Pride goes before destruction" is a saying that shows the connection between operating in pride and bad things happening. When people are filled with pride and think they are better than everyone else or can't be defeated, they often ignore good advice, act carelessly, and make choices that end up hurting them.
OK and then he gives us some more advice
The second part of the line, "a haughty spirit before a fall," makes the connection between being proud and falling even stronger. A haughty spirit is an attitude of being too proud or self-important, which makes people unable to see their own flaws and weaknesses. This kind of pride sets the stage for a sudden and embarrassing fall from God’s glory.
Now lean in
the scriptures is advising us to examine our hearts and check our attitudes! We must make sure that we do not fall prey to the deceptive of pride.
Again as a Christ follower - you and I are called to humility! Called to live humble lives - Now I know - this is the exact opposite of the world especially, when people we’ve trusted have did us wrong - but we must , develope a dependence on God for everything - we must recognize our need for His guidance and grace in every situation, at every moment.
Psalm 119:22 NLT
22 Don’t let them scorn and insult me, for I have obeyed your laws.
Many of us can relate to this verse because we may have been laughed at or made fun of for our faith in Jesus Christ or our devotion to God's Word. Folks may have talked about you , ridicule you, criticized you or rejected you! I remember someone told me - that I had a weak mind, because I relied on God! This world goes against or even downplays the ideals and principles of the real biblical Christian faith. Not some of this stuff that we are seeing on social media and in the news today ! So when you are going through it, because you choose to follow the Word of God and you choose to believe in Jesus Christ - you just like the psalm writer , we can pray to God and ask Him to save us from the shame and ridicule of other people. We still must be faithful to his word and we have to forgive people who do us wrong!
That’s why Jesus said in Matthew 5:11-12
Matthew 5:11–12 NKJV
11 “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
and in 1 Peter 4:14
1 Peter 4:14 NLT
14 If you are insulted because you bear the name of Christ, you will be blessed, for the glorious Spirit of God rests upon you.
Ok the lyrics in this psalm have some more advice for us -
look at this
Psalm 119:23 NKJV
23 Princes also sit and speak against me, But Your servant meditates on Your statutes.
Lean in and let’s unpack this verse
The psalmist talks about having to deal with opposition from powerful people, who are called "princes" and these folks hold places of power and authority. Even though they are saying or doing bad things to the writer , he reminds us to stays focused on thinking about God's rules. His thoughts and attention are on God's Word instead of being consumed by fear or anger.
Ok Pastor, they coming at me - on my job, in my community and even in my family -
Number 1. When people disagree with us or criticize us, let's choose the truths in God's Word instead of what they say or do. Make it a habit to think about His word and let the word of God affect how we think, feel, and act! Quit trying to argue and fight with people who come at you because they don’t want to accept God’s truth
Number 2 - When they come at you fowl, Instead of giving up or being scared put our faith in God's power and his faithfulness. Man we can always count on Jesus to be with us, and Jesus is our ultimate source of power and Jesus is my safety.
Then Number 3 Pray: We must talk to God about our problems and worries! We must ask for Jesus for help, safety, and peace. We can put our problems in His hands and believe that He will make everything work out for the best.
Donnie McClurkin sings a song - Just a little talk with Jesus - The Chorus says
Have A Little Talk with Jesus
Tell God about your troubles
He’ll hear the faintest cry
And answer bye and bye
Feel the prayer wheel turning
Know that the fire’s burning
Just a little talk with Jesus - makes it all right
Ok I’m almost done
Psalm 119:24 NLT
24 Your laws please me; they give me wise advice.
Psalm 119:24 MSG
24 Yes, your sayings on life are what give me delight; I listen to them as to good neighbors!
In this verse, the writer talks about how much he loves God's testimonies, God’s testimonies are His Word, His rules, and His lessons.
The psalmist is glad to hear God's stories because he sees them not only as a source of joy but also as a way to live his life. He knows that God's Word gives him understanding and direction, which shapes his choices, thoughts, and actions.
