Matthew 21:1–11 NKJV
Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me. And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.” All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: “Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ” So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them. And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Hosanna in the highest!” And when He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, “Who is this?” So the multitudes said, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.”
This is the story of Jesus “triumphal entry”, into Jerusalem. Which is really not triumphal at all because Jesus is headed to his death. And the same ones who are praising Him today will 5 days later be yelling crucify Him.
But Jesus is going to a battle so we can obtain victory through Him.
It reminds me of a king ready to go to war. But yet as we know all of his soldiers and subjects will leave Him.
Matthew 26:54–56 (NKJV)
How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?”
In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me.
But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled.
The deserted Jesus and fled into the night. Even though they promised they wouldn’t do so.
Matthew 26:33 NKJV
Peter answered and said to Him, “Even if all are made to stumble because of You, I will never be made to stumble.”
Matthew 26:35 NKJV
Peter said to Him, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And so said all the disciples.
His sheep where scattered.
Matthew 26:31 NKJV
Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written: ‘I will strike the Shepherd, And the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’
They forsook Christ meaning they forgot His public ministry, they forgot the miracles, they forgot the promises. The forgot the fulfillment of prophecy.
This is a far cry from a triumphal entry.
vs 1 - They were at the Mount of Olives, standing at the mount you get a panoramic view of Jerusalem and the Temple.
Now Jesus set two of His disciples on a errand run to get two animals a colt and a donkey. Only in Matthew is it mentioned having two animals.
vs 2 Its unclear where the village was possibly in Bethany, but they were to go to this village, and immediately they will find these animals tied. So more then likely this animals where at the entrance of the village.
vs 3 Matthew 21:3 “And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.””
Jesus told them that if anyone should say anything the disciples were to say “The Lord has need of them” It was almost like a password.
Lord has many different meanings in these days, Lord could be speaking about the owner of the animals. Like we have landlord ,in this case the lord or owner of the animals. But this can’t be the case because the owners are with the animals according to Luke.
Lord could mean God, for the animals was used for Gods service.
Or it could mean Jesus; Him being “Lord”. Because it says “The Lord and not Our Lord” more then likely this is the case. Jesus is the true owner not only of the donkeys but of all peoples property which He could rightfully demand.
Proverb 13:22 But the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.
When Jesus says “you shall say, The Lord has need of them” this is in the future w/ imperative force. This was a command. The where commanded to go with The Lords authority. In The Lords name.
When God tells us something we go with His authority.
This is how Jesus sends us out. Just go don’t worry about the details, I have already settled the details.
It seems like Jesus knew the owners before hand and there was a prearrange password “The Lord has need of them” in order to get the animals.
vs 4 - Matthew 21:4 “All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying:”
vs 5 - Matthew 21:5 ““Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.’
You know that Jesus fulfilled over 300 OT prophesies, some scholars they upwards to close to 600
This is a prophesy in Zechariah 9:9
Zechariah 9:9 NKJV
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.
Just imagine Jesus is going to surrender his body, being shamefully spat on, and tortured to death.
But all the while raking up prophies. Knowing they must be fulfilled.
Christ is describe as Lowly, meaning that He’s gentle, meek.
The very essences of this prophesy is a meek prophesy.
What God would describe themselves in this way.
The very fact that Jesus is riding on a donkey which is symbolic for peace. And carrying burdens. it contrast with a King riding in on a “chariot” with a “war horse”, and a battle bow. Zec. 9:10
Zechariah 9:10 NKJV
I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim And the horse from Jerusalem; The battle bow shall be cut off. He shall speak peace to the nations; His dominion shall be ‘from sea to sea, And from the River to the ends of the earth.’
Jesus is Gentle.
He’s gentle when we don’t have all the answer
He’s gentle when we fall into sin
He’s gentle when we loose our way
He’s gentle when we back slide and forget about him
He’s gentle when we are confused
He’s gentle when we are in overwhelming debt and need help getting out
He’s gentle when theres a death in our family.
Psalm 18:35 (NKJV)
You have also given me the shield of Your salvation; Your right hand has held me up, Your gentleness has made me great.
And its His gentleness that makes us great.
