INTRODUCTION

Good Morning
TODAY IS PALM SUNDAY!
The Sunday that celebrates Jesus riding into Jerusalem presenting Himself as King, five days before He was crucified and 7 days before all human history changed when He rose from the dead.

Who is this Jesus?

Was he a prophet?
A mad man?
Or was He the son of God and King of all creation?
If he is the King of kings, then what kind of person is he?
Should you and I willfully bow our knee and lives to Him?
————————————————————————
MY GOAL TODAY IS TO TAKE US THROUGH A SINGLE DAY OF JESUS - THE ORIGINAL PALM SUNDAY.
AND ASK THE TEXT, WHO REALLY IS THIS JESUS?
———————————————————————————-

THE PLAN

I will introduce who the Scriptures say Jesus is plainly.
And then we will walk through 4 stories in 2 chapters that clearly paint the character / nature / and Person of Jesus!
In the end you will have a choice
Will you deny Him and willfully turn away
Or will you bow before Him and allow Him to rule over your life?
————————————————————————-

WHO DOES SCRIPTURE SAY THIS JESUS REALLY IS?

Matthew 28:18–20 NASB95
And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Revelation 17:14 NASB95
“These will wage war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, because He is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those who are with Him are the called and chosen and faithful.”

WHO IS THIS JESUS?

He is according to eyewitnesses and those who gave their lives up to follow Him, the King of kings, and Lord over all lords,
He is the Lord and the promised Christ / Messiah, the savior of God’s people.
He is the one who holds all authority and power in both the heavens and the earth.

HE IS KING, BUT WHO IS HE?

Is he the kind of King that rules over people for His own sake and pleasure?
Is He the kind of King that seeks fame and wealth at the expence of others?
Is he a king who holds himself high and untouchable?
Is he the kind of king that concerns himself only with his own power while his people suffer?

WHAT KIND OF ALL POWERFUL KING IS THIS JESUS?

——————————————————————————

LET’S SET THE STAGE FOR WHAT IS THE FIRST PALM SUNDAY.

5 days until he is killed by the Jewish religious leaders and the Roman officials.
He knows that the religious leaders will be looking for him.
A massive feast - the Passover is about to take place and the city of Jerusalem will swell to 10-20 times it’s normal population.
There is a nervousness in the air around his disciples, will Jesus take over the city of David or will be be captured and killed like all those who tried before him.

WHO IS THIS KING OF GLORY?

Matthew 20:17–19 NASB95
As Jesus was about to go up to Jerusalem, He took the twelve disciples aside by themselves, and on the way He said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death, and will hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock and scourge and crucify Him, and on the third day He will be raised up.”
Jesus begins his journey to Jerusalem by laying out for his disciples what is about to happen.
He pulls no punches - arrested / beaten/ crucified.
He also tells them, He will be raised up on the 3rd day.
WE ARE ALREADY GETTING THE IDEA HE IS NOT LIKE A NORMAL KING!

WHAT MUST HIS DISCIPLES HAVE BEEN THINKING?

Well we get a clue in the next few verses:
It appears John and James told their momma that Jesus is the Son of Man.
That is a big deal and momma with her boys comes to Jesus with a really big ask.
Can my boys set at yor right and left when you come into your Kingdom?
The boys must have ignored the death and resurrection part? Or maybe they thought he would resurrect into Rambo Jesus.
BIG FIGHT AMONGST THE DISCIPLES.
ARGUING OVER WHO SHOULD HAVE POWER OVER WHO.

THEN JESUS BREAKS IT UP AND HERE IS WHEN WE BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND WHAT KIND OF KING JESUS IS.

Matthew 20:24–28 NASB95
And hearing this, the ten became indignant with the two brothers. But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. “It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
This is a King who serves others.
A Kingr that elevates others
A King that gives Himself for the sake of others.
A king who describes his life as a ransom payment.
RANSOM
A payment given to free one from slavery.
WHO IS THIS KING OF GLORY?
He is the King who took on our human flesh and restored its connection to God.
He is the King who lived a sinless life for our sake.
He is the King who took on Himself our sins to free us from sin by conquering them in his beaten and broken body.
He is the King who took our death and breathed life into it, so we could be free from our slavery to it.
WHO IS THIS KING OF GLORY?
HE IS THE KING WHO SERVES BY GIVING HIS LIFE AS A RANSOM.
2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB95
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
—————————————————————————

JESUS ILLUSTRATES THIS TRUTH WITH A DEMONSTRATION OF RANSOM LOVE.

two blind men / large crowd with Jesus
Headed to Jerusalem pass by Jericho
Have mercy on us Son of David.
They new who He was and they had faith in who He was.
Crowds followng and disciples rebuke them -
Shut up the teacher is teaching / stop interupting our service with your needs.
WHAT DOES JESUS DO?
Goes to them and asks -
“What do you want me to do for you?”
Heal our eyes - Jesus heals

WHAT KIND OF KING IS THIS?

A King who loves, serves, and heals
A king who delivers and restores us
A King who refuses to allow evil to win
————————————————————————-

CROWDS FOLLOW HIM, INCLUDING THE MEN WHO USED TO BE BLIND.

Follow into Jerusalme
Jesus asks for a donkey
Disciples bring him one.
The crowds begin to lay palm branches and their coats on the ground.
Palm branches - Goodness and Victory.
The whole city begins to stir as Jesus rides into the city square as a King of Israel with a huge crowd shouting and praising Him.

THE KINGS FINAL ACT ON PALM SUNDAY.

Matthew 21:12–17 NASB95
And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all those who were buying and selling in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves. And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer’; but you are making it a robbersden.” And the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them. But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that He had done, and the children who were shouting in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they became indignant and said to Him, “Do You hear what these children are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read, ‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies You have prepared praise for Yourself’?” And He left them and went out of the city to Bethany, and spent the night there.

WHO IS THIS KING OF GLORY?

He is the king who rejects a man centered religion that holds the hurting, the strangers, the broken out of God’s healing and saving presence.
He is the King who binds the wounds and heals the sick.
He is the King who calls the hurting and broken to Him and then heals and sets them free.

HE IS THE KING OF GLORY
