Introduction

John had just reiterated to the reader the Love of God and now he will reiterate the goodness of God. The amazing thing about God to me is that he is good to us although we are so undeserving.
The Nature of Sin (1 John 3:4)
Definition of Sin
Sin as lawlessness - violation of God's law and standards.
Sin as rebellion against God's authority.
Understanding Sin's Origin
Sin entered the world through disobedience (Genesis 3).
Sin separates humanity from God and distorts relationships.
The Work of Christ (1 John 3:5)
A. Jesus' Purpose in Coming to Earth
Jesus came to remove sin and its effects (John 1:29).
His sacrificial death reconciles humanity to God.
Consequences of Christ's Work
Sinlessness of Christ - he knew no sin (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Christ's righteousness imputed to believers through faith.
The Identity and Conduct of Believers (1 John 3:6-10)
Transformation in Christ (vv. 6-7)
Believers cannot continue in a lifestyle characterized by sin.
Those born of God exhibit righteousness and purity of heart.
The Contrast Between Children of God and Children of the Devil (vv. 8-10)
Children of God practice righteousness.
Children of the devil continue in sin, opposed to God's ways.
The distinction between those who belong to God and those who do not.
