Introduction

1.Set scene:
the people have become slaves
Burning Bush
Read scripture
2. pray
3. Illus:
While I was in New Orleans this week I got stopped at the gate shack for the first time
- normally I am right behind Cory and they don;t ask any questions
- This time things were different.
When discussing this Cory told me a story about a campus police officer on his first day
- Pulled over the president’s wife
- By all accounts she was as sweet as she could be and laughed it off.
- I can only imagine what I would have said: “Do you know who I am, boy”
[TRN] We respect people differently based on who we know them to be. Similarly,

I. Obedience flows from a knowledge of the LORD. (vv. 1-5)

Pharoah does not know the LORD
“who is the LORD that I should listen to his voice”
Pharoah has no reason to obey the LORD
Pharoah believes himself to be God
we do this same thing
we don’t respect transfers until we see that that they have skill
we don’t obey substitute teachers
we don’t turn work in until we find out
We don’t trust the Lord until we know that he is greater than us.
Pharoah acts wickedly because he does not know the LORD. (vv. 6-15)
Pharoah’s wickedness means trouble for the Israelites
b. Pharoah’s wickedness presents a challenge to the LORD’s promise
[TRN] So often wickedness means trouble for us. So often wickedness presents a challenge to the LORD’s work; however, the LORd is not challenged because…

II. The LORD has a strong hand. (vv.5:20-6:1)

First, lets note Mosses response.
He cries out “why have you send me, why did you cause trouble for your people, why haven’t you done what you said you would do?”
Let’s understand Moses cry. In Ex. 3:12
Exodus 3:12 ESV
He said, “But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.”
Moses has not seen the sign, and at the moment he doesn’t see a way that he can ever see this sign.
Is this a familiar feeling?
divorce
loosing friends
feeling like the Lord won;t speak when you ask him to
When I hear this prayer I can’t help but be reminded of the Psalmist prayer in Ps. 13:1-4
Psalm 13:1–4 ESV
1 How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me? 3 Consider and answer me, O Lord my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death, 4 lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,” lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.
What is so wonderful is that the Psalmist doesn’t stop there. He goes on to say. Ps. 13:5-6
Psalm 13:5–6 ESV
5 But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. 6 I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me.
The Psalmist can say this because Exodus 5 isn;t the end. Notice 6:1
It is by the Lord’s design that these things have happened
Throughout the book of Exodus, the LORD will show all of this is so that Isreal and Egypt would see know the LORD.
No longer would Pharoah’s be able to disobey, they will know the legend of what the LORD has done as we do all the way today.
In Fact,

Reading Forward

Notice 6:2.
the Lord uses this to show, not just Pharoah, but Moses who the LORD is.
The Law will begin in Ex. 20:1
Exodus 20:1–3 CSB
1 Then God spoke all these words: 2 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery. 3 Do not have other gods besides me.
2. All of the Law will be predicated on who the LORD is, what he has done.
3. Likewise the New covenant will be based on the same thing.
Through the work of Jesus, on the cross, The LORD is our God who brought us out of slavery to our sin.
This whole passage forces us to ask ourselves one question: “Who is the LORD”
