Have you ever been asked to do something that you did not feel capable of doing?
Yes, preaching.
What physical characteristics set Saul apart from his peers?(v. 2)
Tall, dark, and handsome....
Why do you think these physical characteristics were given such credibility?
Because the people wanted a physical king. They were thinking physically, so God gave them exactly what they wanted.
What event did God use to bring Saul to Samuel? (v. 3-10)
His father’s donkeys got lost. Kish sent Saul and one servant to find them.
God used something as simple as an animal getting lost to set Saul on a journey that would change his life.
Everything in life truly has purpose.
Who else did God use to help Saul reach Samuel? (v. 11-14)
The young women who came to draw water.
They told Saul where Samuel was, why he was there, and how long he would be there.
Isn’t it amazing how God can equip total strangers with the exact information we need to continue on our journey? Every piece of information you have is important to someone.
Just as they were visiting a well for water, Sual was about to visit a well for spirituality. Samuel was about to give him more information than he bargained for.
What was God’s message unto Samuel in preparation for Saul’s arrival? (v. 15-17)
A man from Benjamin will come tomorrow about this time.
You will anoint him commander over Israel.
He will save my people from the Philistines.
I have heard their cries.
What does Samuel tell Saul and how does he react? (v. 18-21)
You are going to eat with me today, and then tomorrow I will answer whatever questions you have.
1 Samuel 9:19 NLT
19 “I am the seer!” Samuel replied. “Go up to the place of worship ahead of me. We will eat there together, and in the morning I’ll tell you what you want to know and send you on your way.
This was tough to swallow because they were in a hurry and needed answers. Kish was already worrying about his son and Saul needed to get back to his father.
Your donkeys are fine. They have been found. But you and all of your house is the greatest desire of Israel right now.
1 Samuel 9:20 NLT
20 And don’t worry about those donkeys that were lost three days ago, for they have been found. And I am here to tell you that you and your family are the focus of all Israel’s hopes.”
Saul did not understand what was going on right here. He just wanted to find the donkeys, but this was Samuel’s way of getting him to stay. Now he wanted to know what Samuel meant by that comment.
Saul naturally asks why he is so desired since he is not a person of prominence.
Simple answer was because God chose him.
How does Samuel further clarify what God had decided? (v. 22-24)
He sits Saul at the head of the table in the place of honor and then serves him the choice meat from the sacrifice.
How do you think Saul and the other guests reacted to this act upon Saul?
How does it make you feel to know that God uses us in spite of our weaknesses?
It is a humbling feeling to know that God can take me and use me to make a difference in someone else’s life for eternity.
