I. Access to the White House in DC?
II. Brief history of Maundy Thursday and John 13:34–35 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
III. Read Exodus 24:1 and comment. We are continuing the series based on the Book of Exodus. Exodus 24:1 tells us, “Then he said to Moses, ‘Come up to the Lord, you and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and worship from afar.’”
IV. Born dead in sins, by nature sinners, and rebels.
V. Read Exodus 24:2 and comment on Moses as mediator. Exodus 24:2 states, “Moses alone shall come near to the Lord, but the others shall not come near, and the people shall not come up with him.”
VI. Read Exodus 24:8 and comment on blood in Egypt. Exodus 24:8 tells us, “And Moses took the blood and threw it on the people and said, ‘Behold the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.’”
VII. Read Exodus 24:9-11 and comment on access through blood. Exodus 24:9-11 continues, “Then Moses and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel went up, and they saw the God of Israel. There was under his feet as it were a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heaven for clearness. And he did not lay his hand on the chief men of the people of Israel; they beheld God, and ate and drank.”
VIII. We need Jesus Christ’s blood.
IX. Read Hebrews 10:19 and comment about access to God. Hebrews 10:19 tells us, “Therefore, … we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus.” (NIV84)
X. Confidence in God for help and hope.
XI. Conclusion. Unlimited access. That is what Moses and Aaron and the leaders of Israel were given. That is what we have through the blood of Jesus.
We no longer need to be on the outside looking in. We have access to the most powerful One in the entire universe. As we receive the gifts of God through faith at this altar tonight, we have access. We receive the true Body and true Blood of Jesus for the forgiveness of all our sins and wrongs. We receive renewed faith and confidence in the same Jesus who shed His precious blood for us. Amen.
