Introduction: Friends, over the past 5 weeks, we have seen that Jesus teaches with authority that no one else has; He exercises authority that no one else does; He provides incredibly in ways that no one else can; only Jesus could suffer and die for our sins; and we last week how though Jesus would suffer and die He is still almighty God - in fact, each week we have seen how Jesus has demonstrated that He is God!
Today, friends, we’re going to see how Jesus will demonstrate that He is God by doing something in someone’s life that is incredible.
Friends, how many of you have been sick before? - Yup, we all have. In fact, we’re going to see some really sick men come to Jesus and Jesus will do something incredible!
Content and Explanation: Luke 17:11–19 11 On the way to Jerusalem he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee.
Friends, Jesus and His disciples are taking a journey by foot (what a long walk!)
12 And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance 13 and lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.”
Friends, these men were really sick and they knew it!
Leprosy was a skin disease that was really contagious - evidenced the fact that they stood at a distance from others!
These men desperately cried out for Jesus to have mercy on them!
Friends, these men were so sick that there wasn’t a doctor who could prescribe something to heal them.
Friends, asking Jesus for mercy while they’re so sick indicates that they were really asking Jesus to heal them.
Friends, why is it that only Jesus could heal them?
Because He’s God.
Friends, look at how Jesus demonstrates that He’s God next.
14 When he saw them he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were cleansed.
Friends Jesus neither touch them or said, “Be healed!”
Friends, Jesus told them to leave!
Friends, this is incredible because when you see a doctor, you tell them that you’re sick, they don’t normally tell you to leave right after, right? (No.)
Friends, we know that they were healed because of the phrase “they were cleansed,” all of their open sores were healed in an instant - what incredible power of Jesus!
Notice, friends, how they respond!
15 Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; 16 and he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan.
Friends, this man loudly proclaimed God’s praises because he was excited about what only God could do!
But, friends, he did not just loudly proclaim what only God could do but he was also thankful that God had changed his life from being sick to being well.
17 Then Jesus answered, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? 18 Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?”
You see, friends, not everyone came back to praise God and thank Jesus (ingratitude).
19 And he said to him, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.”
Friends, this man believed that Jesus could heal Him because He believed that Jesus was God, or else he would not have cried out to Jesus for mercy (to heal him)!
Friends, do you think that this man stopped praising and thanking God after he left Jesus?
No.
God had changed his life; there’s no way that he would have stopped.
Application: Praise God for transforming your life.
Friends, we have seen how Jesus changed a man’s life today and this man praised and thanked Jesus for what Jesus did
Friends, if Jesus can heal a sick man of an incurable disease, He must also be able to forgive us of our sins.
Friends, when we see this kind of power, we are impressed that Jesus must be God.
Friends, you might be thinking, “Why do I need to be forgiven?”
“What have I done?”
Friends, there were 10 men who had been healed but only one of them came back and thanked Jesus.
We call the other 9 men ungrateful - they demonstrated ingratitude.
Friends, I imagine that we can all remember when someone did something kind for us and we did not say “thank you” for one reason or another.
Friends, remember, sin is anything that we think, say, or do that displeases God.
Our sin deserves punishment - to be separated from God forever in hell.
But, friends, Jesus died so that we can be forgiven of our sins, even ingratitude
Friends, Jesus can forgive you of this sin and all your sin if you believe on Him as your only Savior from your sins.
__________ will be available to speak with anyone who would like to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ as their only Savior from their sins for the first time in their life today.
Admonition: Friends, if God has changed your life by saving you from your sins, you always have a reason to thank and praise the Lord (and I hope that you will!).
You can do so today.
Especially, you can do so this week with Easter and proclaiming that Jesus is alive having risen from the dead to never die again!
