As we begin our Easter Celebration
You may notice somethings are a bit different
Today is Maundy Thursday
In the Events of Easter that we celebrate
This would be considered the beginning of those events
Maundy Thursday is also called Holy Thursday the Maundy comes from the idea of Mandate
Which is exactly what happens on the Thursday Night
1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. 2 During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God, 4 got up from supper, and laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself.
This sort of begins things in motion for what is to come
Remember they had asked him where to get things ready for the Passover celebration
He tells them and they go and find everything just as He had said it would happen
Jesus knowing that His time is coming
If you will recall as you read through the Gospel Jesus is always saying now is not His time
Well His time is about to happen and He knows it
Jesus knew that He would be departing and at some point going back to the Father
the devil has set things in motion for Judas to betray Jesus
But look at vs 4
Church Matt sent me some information about this and I had read this and have read it a bunch of times, but Matt showed me somethings
I mean when we read that we go OK whats the big deal
This would have been the costume when guests came into your house
But there is so much more going on
This is a picture of what is going on
7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.
This is what is going on
That Jesus stepped out of glory and set aside His glory and crown, and throne
And stepped right into humanity
No one else was going to wash anyone's feet
Jesus being the true servant stands and removes his glory of being the leader of the group, of being this revered teacher and takes the role of a lower servant
Can you imagine how awkward it would have been
To have your teacher get up and stripe off His clothes
To take off His glory and honor and prestige to wash your feet
What an amazing picture of servant leadership and that is exactly what Jesus is going to be doing
That is His purpose is coming
To lead
And to be a servant
Those two in today's day and age don’t usually go together
But you can start to see how this begins the events that will follow in the next few days
Jesus the teacher
begins to wash everyone’s feet
Then things start to get awkward
Then Peter feeling the awkwardness says something
5 Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. 6 So He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, “Lord, do You wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I do you do not realize now, but you will understand hereafter.” 8 Peter said to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” 9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.” 10 Jesus said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.”
So Jesus begins to wash everyone's feet, then Peter gets so nervous
Peter says you shall never wash my feet
You are to high for that Jesus
You kinda get that feeling
Jesus answers and explains that if I don’t wash your feet then you have no part in me
I think at this point Peter is sort of getting and understanding who Jesus is at this point
Like there may be some reservations but Peter wants whatever Jesus has to offer
Maybe you have been like that
Not completely understanding what Jesus is but knowing that you want what He has
So then Peter and I would bet most if not all of us after hearing Jesus say that would be just like Peter
Well then Jesus wash all of me
Like that makes sense I wouldn’t want Jesus to just stop at my feet
Jesus explains for those who have already been bathed
Or for those who are already believers you just need your feet the rest of you is clean
For the believers here this evening you don’t need to be rebathed, you just need your feet cleaned because you walk around in a broken sinful world and you pick up the junk of this world
But there maybe some of you who are not clean this morning
meaning you have never repented or trusted in Jesus to be Lord of your life
26 While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” 27 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28 for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.
As they are reclining at the table probably having some conversation
Jesus took some bread
He explains that the bread represents his body
That His Body will be broken
Jesus is telling that is his body would be broken for them
That He would pay for their debt
After the bread Jesus took the cup of wine
Explaining to the disciples that it was his blood
Now let me explain the bread and the cup of wine represent Jesus
There would be some that would say they are but it is all symbolic
Jesus is saying that His blood will be spill to cover our sin
He is saying to the disciples and us that if you have faith and trust in me
That my body being broken and that my blood being spilled will cover your sin
That is what it is to have faith
To believe and trust that Christ’s sacrifice that He is fortelling here will be sufficient to cover our sin
This is the new covenant that Christ is introducing to the apostles
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
That salvation is through no one but Him
This is what the Lords Supper is about
recounting your trust and faith in Christ that His sacrifice was sufficient to save you!
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
We believe that the Lords Supper is set aside for the believer who has repented of there sin and trusted in Jesus
The Lords Supper reminds us of the sacrifice that was sufficient for our salvation
That the bread and blood represent Christ
Who being the ultimate servant stepped out of heaven and glory and took on humanity and was obedient to the cross and death
To remind ourselves that the bread represents the Body of Christ that was broken in your place on the cross to pay your debt of sin
To remind ourselves that the blood represents the Blood of Christ that was spilled in lue of your own blood to cover your own sin
This evening our invitation and response time will be on your own
We will be playing some music
During that time as you feel lead we will have the Lords Supper for you to take on your own as a family wherever
At the end of the song I will pray
