A Word of Victory

1. He had finished His Father’s will and work.
John 4:34 “Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.”
2. He had finished fulfilling the Old Testament prophecies related to His substitutionary sacrifice on the cross.
Matthew 5:17 ““Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”
Psalm 69:21 “They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.”
3. He finished securing all of the promises of God.
2 Corinthians 1:20 “For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.”
4. He had finished perfectly obeying the Law and paying the penalty that it required on our behalf.
Galatians 3:10 “For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.””
Galatians 3:13 “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—”
5. He finished fulfilling all of the Old Covenant types, shadows, and sacrificial system.
Colossians 2:16–17 “Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.”
Hebrews 10:10 “And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
Hebrews 10:14 “For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.”
6. He fulfilled and put an end to the Old Covenant, and inaugurated the New Covenant by His blood.
Hebrews 8:13 “In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.”
Hebrews 9:15 “Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.”
7. His suffering is finished. The cup of God’s wrath is drained down to the dregs!
Psalm 75:8 “For in the hand of the Lord there is a cup with foaming wine, well mixed, and he pours out from it, and all the wicked of the earth shall drain it down to the dregs.”
8. He had finished paying our sin debt.
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
See Revelation 20:11–15...
We will be judged for every action (2 Corinthians 5:10) and inaction (James 4:17), for every careless word (Matthew 12:36-37), and for every thought and intention of our hearts (John 12:48, Hebrews 4:12-13).
See Colossians 2:13-15...
9. He had finished disarming the forces of darkness.
10. In other words, His work of redemption was finished.
“He had done all, paid all, performed all, suffered all that was needful to save sinners, and satisfy the justice of God. He had fought the battle and won it, and in two days would give proof of it by rising again.” — J.C. Ryle
Hebrews 12:2 “looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” (author and finisher)
