Introduction
Good Friday..
One of the most important days in history..
A day marked by pain, torture, bloodshed and death..
but a day marking triumph and victory for humanity
Today
today, we rember the price that was paid for us..
the price for freedom..
Not from the tryony of this world..
not from the control and grip of another country..
but liberation of our soul from the grip of sin and the curse of eternal death.
This is a day that changed everything for ever..
The last Supper
The last Supper
In Matthew 26, Jesus is eating a final passover meal with his disicples..
and its during this meal that Jesus lays out a final understanding of what is about to happen to him..
About to happen.
in mear hours..
he will be arrested and tried on trumped up charges..
being an inocent man..
he will be passed on to pilot..
and pilot will find no fault in him..
but still the religous leaders will stir the crowd to condemn him to a crimnals death…
He will be beaten…
Tortured..
Spit on..
cursed..
Mocked..
Jeered..
and finally crucified..
Hung on the cross to die..
but why?
Jesus tell us the why
Jesus tell us the why
Jesus himself tells us why
As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day.” And they were greatly distressed.
And as he passes the cup in during the the lords supper he tell the disicples exzaclty why..
look at verse 28…
Matthew 26:28 (ESV)
for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Jesus tells us that his blood was poured out..
as a covenant between God and man..
for the forgiveness of sins…
Simply put Christ Blood paid the price for our sins..
The Blood is Contraversial
The Blood is Contraversial
We are living in a world where to talk about the shedding of blood is contraversial
we dont want to think about blood being shed..
we dont want to think about blood covering things..
even christians and churches dont want to talk about the blood..
but the book of hebrews tells us in..
Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.
SImply put..
if you take the blood out of the cross
there is not purpose left in the cross..
Jesus himself told us..
that it was his blood that was shed..
that brought forgivness of sins..
His blood paid the price for our sins!
We had a debt we could not pay....
We had a debt we could not pay....
You see mankind had a debt we could not pay..
Garden
when adam and eve were in the garden..
God gave them a boundry..
that they were not to eat of the tree in the middle.
and we know that they could not keep that boundry..
but rather broke the comand of god..
and chose to live their own way..
and thus sin was brought into the world..
Paul
Paul will later write
in romans 5:12
Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—
paul reiterates this in romamns 3:23
Romans 3:23 (ESV)
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Paul takes this further and tells us that this in has a price..
its requires payment..
attonment for us to be restored in relationship to god..
Romans 6:23a (ESV)
For the wages of sin is death
All
all people
Every person who has been born of this earth..
has fallen short of the glory of god..
we have sinned
and this sin is a debt that must be paid..
must be accounted for..
And Our debt required Payment
And Our debt required Payment
Hebrews
hebrews tells us the only way to account for our debt under the law..
the only way to legally suffice the debt..
its to shed blood..
and not just any blood..
But the sacrificail blood of the lamb..
Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.
God establishes this in the old testament.
Leviticus 17:11 (ESV)
For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life.
you see under the law sin had to be atoned for, or cover, by the blood of the sacrifice..
blood had to be shed..
but these sacrifices were not sufficient for ever..
they had to be made by mankind yearly..
For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
The sacrifical system of animals ..
was only temporal..
it was not strong enough to secure eteral forgivness…
and thus regular sacrifice had to be made..
BUT THEN JESUS CAME..
But He paid final payment for our sin..
But He paid final payment for our sin..
And now
But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
Jesus came and shed his perfect blood
and because the final sacrifice for us..
paying our debt for our sin..
Colossians 2:13–14 (ESV)
And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
It was the blood that was shed on the cross.
that paid our price..
and now the bible says that if we will but believe in him..
our debt is paid..
and we are given life..
So we could have life..
So we could have life..
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
what is eternal life?
its not physical living..
its eternal relationship with Jesus..
Eteral restoration with out father..
its living with God as he intended for his creation to live with him at the begining..
restore finally..
Paul
I love how paul puts it now..
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
It was the blood that paid the price for us..
His sacrifice made us whole
and gave us life..
Passover
Passover
You see the cross event is a greater picture of passover..
Passover
during passover god told the people..
take the lamb and shed its blood..
and take the blood and apply it to the doorpost of the house.
and all who have the blood applied to the doorpost will be passed over by the angle of death..
they will be spared..
THE BLOOD HAD TO BE APPLIED..
Jesus
the same is true of Jesus
we must applied his blood to our lives..
its in this application that the covering atones for our sin..
Jesus died for all..
but all will not be saved if they do not applie his sacrifice to their hearts..
HOw
How do we applie the blood of Jesus?
we believe on him..
all who call on him will be saved..
to all who believed in him he gave the right to become childrne..
its by putting our full faith and belief in him..
in confessing him as our lord and repenting of our sins that we applie the blood of christ to our lives..
and accept the eternal life he has given…
Altar
Altar
have you applied the blood to your life
