Heaven & Hell

Reality that shapes our understanding of Jesus’ death.

Mocked

The truth in their mockery
Actions… Matthew 27:27-31
Matthew 27:27–31 NIV
27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. 31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.
Words… Matthew 27:39-43
Matthew 27:39–43 NIV
39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!” 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”

Crucified

Forsaken
Matthew 27:46 NIV
46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).
Psalm 22:1 “1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish?”
Psalm 22 // Fulfillment in Christ
“My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?” (v. 1). // “And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (Matt. 27:46).
“Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them. They cried unto thee, and were delivered” (vv. 4–5). // “He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him” (Matt. 27:43).
“But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people” (v. 6). // “They spit upon him . . . smote him on the head. . . . They had mocked him” (Matt. 27:30–31).
“All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head” (v. 7). // “They that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads” (Matt. 27:39; Mark 15:29).
“He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him” (v. 8). // “And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them deride him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ” (Luke 23:35).
“I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels” (v. 14). // “One of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water” (John 19:34).
“My strength is dried upon like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death” (v. 15). // “Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst” (John 19:28).
“For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have enclosed me” (v. 15). // Chief priests, elders, the multitude, soldiers, scribes, thieves took actions against Jesus (Matt. 27:20–44).
“They pierced my hands and my feet.” (v. 16) // “And they crucified him” (Matt. 27:35). // “And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced” (John 19:37, citing Zech. 12:10).
“I may tell all my bones: they look [and] stare upon me” (v. 17). // “But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs” (John 19:33).
“They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture” (v. 18). // “And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots” (Matt. 27:35).

Why?

No other way.
Matthew 26:39 NIV
39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
Hebrews 9:22 NIV
22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
2 Corinthians 5:21 NIV
21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Only Jesus could save us from God’s wrath.
Hell
Revelation 14:9–11 NIV
9 A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on their forehead or on their hand, 10 they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.”
Jonathan Edwards…
1. Whose wrath it is: it is the wrath of the infinite God.
Not a human judge… who struggles with their own sin; who only sees in pieces, never the full picture; who judges as he / she sees best according to the law of the land; who punishes with the punishment that people think best.
The infinite God… holy, without sin; sees and knows all, even the darkest, deepest kept secrets, he always has the full picture; he judges according to his law; he punishes with righteousness, his wrath is holy, is wrath is just.
“2. It is the fierceness of his wrath that you are exposed to. We often read of the fury of God; as in “According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay fury to his adversaries. (Isaiah 59:18) ” So “For behold, the Lord will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire. (Isaiah 66:15)” And in many other places. So, we read of “the wine press of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. (Rev. 19:15)” The words are exceeding terrible. If it had only been said, “the wrath of God,” the words would have implied that which is infinitely dreadful: but it is “the fierceness and wrath of God.” The fury of God! The fierceness of Jehovah! Oh, how dreadful that must be! Who can utter or conceive what such expressions carry in them! But it is also “the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.” As though there would be a very great manifestation of his almighty power in what the fierceness of his wrath should inflict, as though omnipotence should be as it were enraged, and exerted, as men are wont to exert their strength in the fierceness of their wrath. Oh! then, what will be the consequence! What will become of the poor worm that shall suffer it! Whose hands can be strong? And whose heart can endure? To what a dreadful, inexpressible, inconceivable depth of misery must the poor creature be sunk who shall be the subject of this!”
3. The misery you are exposed to is that which God will inflict to that end, that he might show what that wrath of Jehovah is. God hath had it on his heart to show to angels and men, both how excellent his love is, and also how terrible his wrath is.
4. It is everlasting wrath. It would be dreadful to suffer this fierceness and wrath of Almighty God one moment; but you must suffer it to all eternity.
What are the unrepentant to do in impending wrath that is to come? Fly, flee, escape…
In the words of Gandalf hanging on the edge of the cliff, balrog falling behind him? Fly you fools.
Fly from God’s wrath, bend the knee to Jesus, repentant of sin, trust in the finished work of Christ, who dealt with God’s wrath on your behalf!
And if we do repent?
Heaven
Revelation 5:9–10 NIV
9 And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. 10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.”
Revelation 21:3–8 NIV
3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” 5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6 He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. 7 Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. 8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

MEET JESUS. Mocked and Crucified for you.

Will you accept his gift of life.
John 3:36 NIV
36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.
Jesus’ cry of dereliction… his forsakenness, was all part of the only plan of our gracious God, because only Jesus could shed blood for the forgiveness of sins, your sins, my sins, only Jesus could bear up under the wrath of God and give us life, only Jesus.
