When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
Life is full of transitions, both naturally as well as spiritually. Our growth as human beings is filled with transitions, from infant to toddler, toddler to child, child to teen, teen to adult and adult to senior citizen. We transition in our learning, in our relationships, in our understanding, and even in our ministries and our jobs.
The bible shows us transitions throughout all of it’s writings and discourses,
Adam and Eve transitioned out of the Garden of Eden
Abram Transitioned from his Father’s house
Moses transitioned the Israelites from Egypt to the WIlderness
Joshua Transitioned from the wilderness to the promised land
These plus many others show that transitioning is apart of everyone’s journey. Why would the savior, the God with us, the Lord walking in our shoes, who left Glory to become win that we might be considered the righteousness of God, choose not to show us a transition himself.
These 7 sayings are but Christ’s prophetic utterances of a transition, we’re changing over, we’re getting to the other side, we’re gaining new glory, new understanding, new grace, new mercy, new covenants and ultimately new life!
Here we are though in a transition of transitions. Jesus in his 1st 3 sayings is in a “before I go” transition, this being the final of the 1st, the 4 after me will bring on the “as I go” piece. So Jesus in his “Before I go phase”, it operates similar to his walking and teaching ministry, he would confirm his oneness with the Father, he would mention the promise of the coming kingdom and then reach back to something that has already been spoken for the purpose of establishing a new understanding and covenant.
John 19:26–27 says “When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.”
I find this statement to be of significant impact not simply because Christ uttered the words, but because he his full circle solidifying a once controversial statement earlier in the text. In Matthew 12 Mary and Jesus brothers came to see him while he was teaching and it was announced that they were there to see him and Jesus replied to their arrival by saying “ Who is my Mother, and who are my brothers, them who do the will of my father”
I don’t think I need to explain that Jesus, is not the author of confusion, nor is he messy, a gossiper, liar nor one who dishonors parents. I don’t think I need to explain that Jesus, is a bringer of peace, clarity, the truth of God, way of God and the Life in GOD for all humanity so I’ll just leave you with this.
Jesus portion in this transition flows like this
Before I go:
I need you to know that I’ve declared you to be forgiven in the father’s eyes,
therefore Everyone, who calls upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved (Rom 10:13)
I need you to know that I’ve declared you to be with me in Paradise
And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus (Eph 2:6)
This work is now established as a family business
The Father has sent the son
The son has become the 1st born of many brothers
The Mother’s and the Father’s IN God have to walk with the Sons and Daughters IN God
Mother’s I know you have birthed your babies and
Fathers I know You have reared your children,
Brothers I know you honor your daddies
Sisters I know you honor your mothers
But the work of God has to go beyond the boundaries of DNA
The work of God is the establishing of new familial connections.
