22 Then they said to him, “Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”
23 He said, “I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”
24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.
25 They asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
26 John answered them saying, “I baptize in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know.
27 “It is He who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”
28 These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

Jesus - Our Passover Lamb
Jesus - Our Passover Lamb
The New Testament, especially the Gospel of John looks at the life of Jesus through the lens of the Passover.
The Passover was a feast that was observed by Israel, and still is by many.
It was at the time of this feast when Jesus came into Jerusalem, was crucified, and raised 3 days later.
To understand the life and death of Jesus, we have to look further back to understand the concept of the passover lamb.
Explain the first passover and its significance to Israel
The passover lamb becomes the basis for the entire sacrificial system that develops in the Old Testament.
The symbolism here is that just as God delivered Israel out of Egypt, so He will deliver us from the slavery of sin…
34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.
So the passover feast was a memorial to what was, but a look forward to what would be…
So in this passage, when John is calling Jesus the Lamb of God, He is looking back at the lamb of passover who freed Israel from bondage, and looking forward to when Jesus would free all mankind from their bondage to sin..
1 Corinthians 5:7 (NASB95)
7 For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed.
Make no mistake… The words of Jesus are not just a warning against sin, He is also saying that the problem of sin is unsolvable within ourselves…
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
So all of us have been or are a slave to sin…
And the only way out of the bondage of that sin is through the sacrifice of the passover lamb..
God’s justice required sacrifice, but His love compelled Him to act on our behalf…
So He became the sacrifice in Jesus that the sacrifice would be perfect, a feat which no person could accomplish.
When Jesus entered Jerusalem on the colt of a donkey (Palm Sunday), he came at the same time and by the same route that the passover lamb would be brought…
And it was the same night that the passover lambs were being slaughtered that Jesus was hung on the cross for you and I.
What do you mean for you and I?
The bible says..
Romans 6:23 (NASB95)
23 For the wages of sin is death,
Just like death was on the way through Egypt that night of passover, so death is coming for us because of our own sins..
But just like the blood of the passover lamb was the protecting sign, so the blood of Jesus is our testimony that death no longer has any say because sin has lost it’s hold…
23 “For the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to come in to your houses to smite you.
Here’s what I know about the blood… It was either there or it wasn’t… There is no gray area with the blood…
The blood is either on the doorpost of your heart, or it is not..
13 “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it.
14 “For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.
There is only one way and His name is Jesus!
He told Martha, I am THE way…
You’ve gotta know that you know that you know… There’s no room for half commitment. The blood is either there, or it isn’t.
Choose this day whom you will serve… As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord…
We like to talk about the resurrection because today is the day we celebrate His resurrection, but we can’t get to Jesus raised from the dead without first going through the cross…
If it were possible for you to do this on your own, achieve holiness on your own, be perfect on your own, Jesus died for nothing…
But God in his infinite wisdom provided a way that we can commune with him again.
He could have left us in our bondage to sin, headed to a devil’s hell, but God’s love for you and I compelled Him to make a way…
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
That is the good news we call the Gospel! That He stood in our place and now we can stand before God as His righteousness, if only we accept the offer he made for us…
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
I’m not here to condemn you, hate on you, or judge you. I’m here to tell you all that can be wiped away in a moment!
In fact, the bible says,
1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
If you are in Him and His blood marks the doorpost of your heart, there is no longer any condemnation!
18 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers,
19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.
People are often worried that they will be judged in the church, but for the believer all judgement has been done away with!
10 By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
11 Every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins;
12 but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God,
13 waiting from that time onward until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet.
The sacrifice has already been made for your sins, He’s just waiting on you!
Jesus, the spotless lamb, the sinner’s savior, came, wrapped himself up in flesh, born to a virgin, laid in a manger, lived 33.5 years, and died as the sacrifice that would deliver you and I from the bondage of sin and death!
God won’t force this on you… It isn’t automatic…
He’s waiting on you!
Here’s the last point I want to make about this time of passover:
11 ‘Now you shall eat it in this manner: with your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste—it is the Lord’s Passover.
Eat it in haste! Don’t hesitate! Let’s get this done!
Be ready to go at a moment’s notice! Don’t delay, be ready…
Because one day Jesus is going to split the eastern sky wide open, returning for a people who have been washed in His blood…
Altar Call
Have you been washed?
Has your soul been cleansed by the blood of the lamb?
Have you believed in your heart and confessed with your mouth?
Now may be your time…
