Jesus has called us to “Go the Extra Mile.” We use this phrase today in our society to mean “to do more than one is required to do” or “to make more effort than is expected.” However, Jesus used the phrase “whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two,” not just simply in the context of doing more than is required or putting in extra effort. He used this phrase in the context of going the extra mile for someone who has offended us. Jesus has called us to Go the Extra Mile as we (1) Ignore Insults, (2) Exceed Expectations, and (3) Bear Burdens.

OPENING

Over the past couple weeks we’ve been looking at some of The Hard Sayings of Jesus. Jesus said some hard things that were difficult for some people to understand or accept. This week were are going to take a look at another one of The Hard Sayings of Jesus in Matthew Chapter 5, beginning at Verse 38.

SCRIPTURE

Matthew 5:38–42 NKJV
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. 40 If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. 41 And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.

INTRODUCTION

The Meaning of “Go the Extra Mile”
We use this phrase today in our society to mean “to do more than one is required to do…to make more effort than is expected.”
But Jesus used the phrase “whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two,” not just simply in the context of putting in extra effort or doing more than is required, but also to do for someone who has offended us.
Jesus Fulfills the Law
Matthew 5:17–18 NKJV
17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.
The Right Kind of Righteousness
Matthew 5:20 NKJV
20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.
Jesus Introduces Radical Change to Living Out the Law (5 Concepts)
Eye for an Eye
Turn the Other Cheek
Give Your Cloak Also

MESSAGE

Ignore Insults
All the Ways Jesus was Insulted
Glutton
Drunkard
Illegitimate Child
Blasphemer
Madman
Matthew 27:12 NKJV
12 And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing.
How We Are Instructed to Respond
Romans 12:17–21 NKJV
17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
How Do We Learn to Ignore the Insults?
Strong Faith
Thick Skin
Soft Heart
That Doesn’t Mean You Ignore Abuse
When Jesus said “turn the other cheek,” He was not talking about physical abuse.
As Christians, we are not a doormat, but we are also not muddy shoes.
But there comes a time when we have to stand for what is right.
Even Jesus flipped over a few tables.
Exceed Expectations
Jesus said some hard things
If someone takes your tunic, give them your cloak also
Ill. Man robbed at gunpoint offers thief his jacket.
If someone forces you to go one mile, go with them two
Ill. Deputies help woman in electric wheelchair.
If someone asks to borrow something, don’t turn them away
This is often opposed to what our flesh says
Our flesh says, “That’s not in my job description!” Jesus says, “Go the extra mile.”
Ill. Joseph
Our flesh says, “But look at how they wronged me!” Jesus says, “Go the extra mile.”
Our flesh says, “Let someone else take care of it!” Jesus says, “Go the extra mile.”
Ill. Boaz
Our flesh says, “Why should I help them? Look at the way they treated me!” Jesus says, “Go the extra mile.”
Our flesh says, “I’ll get them back for what they’ve done to me!” Jesus says, “Go the extra mile.”
Return Evil with a Blessing
1 Peter 3:9 NKJV
9 not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.
Bear Burdens
It doesn’t matter if someone has treated you good or bad, be there for them when they need you
Galatians 6:2 NKJV
2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
But especially those in the body of Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:25–27 NKJV
25 that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. 26 And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.
We’re called to put others first
Philippians 2:3–4 NKJV
3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.
It is our job to help lift up and encourage one another
Romans 15:1 NKJV
1 We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves.
