Only when we discover the grace of giving do we enjoy the experience the joy of living.
Are you actively involved in community activities? Whether it's volunteering at a local shelter, participating in neighborhood clean-up efforts, or contributing to community events, I'm curious to know who among us is committed to making a difference in our community.
Now, let's take it a step further. How much are you willing to do to make improvements in your community? Would you be willing to give up your time, your resources, your money? In other words, what sacrifices are you prepared to make to see positive change take root in our neighborhoods, our towns, and our cities? What about your local church? What would you be willing to do for your country, or the world as a whole? Let's take a moment to reflect on the depth of our commitment to building a stronger, more vibrant community together.
One exemplary Canadian whose actions significantly overhauled local community dynamics and values is Dr. Lorna Breen. As an emergency room physician in New York City, Dr. Breen's work exemplifies the profound impact one person can have on their community.
Dr. Breen tirelessly served on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic, displaying exceptional dedication and compassion in caring for patients. She worked long hours, often under immense pressure, to provide medical care to those in need. Her commitment to her patients and her community during this challenging time was unwavering.
Tragically, Dr. Breen herself fell victim to the mental health toll of the pandemic, experiencing burnout and trauma from the relentless demands of her work. In April 2020, she died by suicide, sparking a wave of shock and grief among her colleagues and the wider medical community.
In the wake of Dr. Breen's passing, her family and colleagues embarked on a mission to honor her memory and address the mental health crisis facing healthcare workers. They established the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes' Foundation, dedicated to improving mental health support and resources for healthcare professionals.
Through their advocacy and fundraising efforts, the foundation has raised awareness about the importance of mental health care for frontline workers and provided resources to support their well-being. Dr. Breen's legacy serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of prioritizing mental health and supporting those who dedicate their lives to serving others.
Dr. Breen's actions and the ongoing work of the foundation have sparked conversations and initiatives aimed at addressing mental health issues within the medical community and beyond, leading to a positive shift in community dynamics and values surrounding mental health awareness and support.
I invite you to discover the grace of giving. The Grace of giving leads us to experience the joy of living. And we see this in scripture. There is a a profound truth embedded within the pages of Acts, a truth that resonates through the corridors of time and speaks directly to our hearts. It is the truth that salvation in Christ not only redeems individuals but also reconstructs community dynamics, setting a precedent for Christian living that extends beyond personal gain to communal wellbeing. We are going to explore this theme over the next few weeks as we continue our Easter exploration, in the book of Acts.
A united selfless community
A united selfless community
Acts 4:32 “32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.”
The Unity of the Early Christian Community is shown through these passages: the awe-inspiring unity and selflessness of the early Christian community. They were not merely a collection of individuals; they were bound together by the transformative power of faith. They shared a common heart and mind, reflecting the unity found in Christ (Acts 4:32). Moreover, they did not cling to their possessions as symbols of personal achievement or status; instead, they shared everything they had, prioritizing the needs of the community over individual gain (Acts 4:32).
Many of you will recall Jack Layton, a politician and former political party leader in Canada. Layton's actions had a significant impact on overhauling community dynamics and values, particularly in Toronto where he served as a city councillor and later as the city's mayor.
During his time as a city councillor in the 1980s and 1990s, Layton advocated for affordable housing, environmental sustainability, and social justice issues. He worked closely with community organizations, activists, and residents to address issues such as homelessness, poverty, and urban development.
As mayor of Toronto from 2003 to 2010, Layton implemented progressive policies aimed at improving the quality of life for all residents. He championed initiatives such as the "Toronto Act," which granted the city more powers and autonomy from the provincial government, allowing for greater flexibility in addressing local needs.
Layton's leadership style was characterized by inclusivity, collaboration, and a strong commitment to grassroots activism. He engaged with residents from diverse backgrounds and encouraged civic participation in decision-making processes.
One of Layton's most enduring legacies is his role in revitalizing the city's waterfront and promoting sustainable urban development. He advocated for the creation of public spaces, parks, and recreational facilities along the waterfront, transforming it into a vibrant and accessible area for residents and visitors alike.
Layton's unwavering dedication to social justice and community building continues to inspire Canadians to this day. His legacy serves as a reminder of the power of individual action in effecting positive change at the local level.
Acts 4:34–35 “ that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.”
Salvation Breaks Down Barriers:
Salvation Breaks Down Barriers:
This passage serves as a beacon of light, illuminating the role of salvation in breaking down barriers of selfishness and personal gain. The early Christians' radical act of sharing possessions and providing for the needy was a direct result of their experience of salvation (Acts 4:34-35). Their actions stood in stark contrast to the prevailing societal norms, demonstrating a commitment to living out the gospel in practical ways.
As we reflect on the example set by the early Christians, we are confronted with a call to action. We are called to embody the values of unity, selflessness, and communal support as evidence of our salvation. Our commitment to communal wellbeing not only reflects the heart of the gospel but also serves as a testimony to the transformative power of Christ in our lives
2 Corinthians 5:18 “All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:”

Opening Prayer (based on 1 John 1:1-2:2)
Opening Prayer (based on 1 John 1:1-2:2)
Let us pray,
Eternal God, we approach Your throne of grace, mindful of the message declared by John in his first letter, recounting the Word of life made manifest among us. He speaks of what was seen, heard, and touched—the very life of Jesus, Your Son, made tangible in our world. Through these sacred testimonies, we encounter the living truth of Christ, drawing us into deep fellowship with You and each other.
Lord, in Your light, we see our shadows and acknowledge our sins. We often stumble in darkness, veering away from Your path. Yet, Your faithfulness shines bright, promising forgiveness and purification from all unrighteousness through Jesus, our advocate and propitiation.
As we come together in worship, fill us with the joy of fellowship that John spoke of, a fellowship with You and with Your Son, Jesus Christ. Empower us to live out this truth, reflecting Your love and righteousness in our daily walk.
We thank You for the assurance and advocacy we have in Christ, who not only covers our sins but also intercedes for all of us. May our worship today be a reflection of the eternal life You have revealed to us, an offering of gratitude and commitment to Your ways.
In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Redeemer, we pray. Amen.
