CA few weeks ago we began a new sermon series using the acrostic: GOSPEL to help us understand the Gospel and explain the Gospel. Today we will look at the letter “E” but before we do I want us to be reminded of what each letter stands for...
G-God Created us to be with Him
O-Our Sins Separate us from God
S-Sins Cannot be Removed by Good Deeds
P-Paying the Price for Sin Jesus Died and Rose Again
E-Everyone who Trusts in Jesus Alone has Eternal and Life
L-Life, Abundant and Eternal Can be Yours Today
As we look at the letter “E” today, let me invite you to join me in Romans 10. As we explore this passage of Scripture we will see how the bad news of sin and the GOOD NEWS of the Gospel affects EVERYONE. The first thing we see from this passage is that...

Everyone Needs to be Saved (vv. 1-2)

Notice what Paul says in Romans 10:1-2
Romans 10:1–2 NKJV
Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.
As Paul opens up this chapter he is expressing his passionate desire for the salvation of his people—the Jews. You see many of the Jews had rejected Christ as the Messiah. They had no placed their faith in Him as their Lord and Savior and as a result were still separated from God due to their sin, even though they were God’s special people.
If God’s special people needed to be saved by Jesus, who do we, as Gentiles think we are?
You see there is no difference! We all need the salvation from sin and judgment that Jesus offers! Do you remember what Paul said in Romans 3:9-10
Romans 3:9–10 NKJV
What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin. As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one;
The sad truth is many of the same Jewish people that had rejected their own Messiah were very SINCERE. In verse 2 of our text Paul confesses that they have a “ZEAL FOR GOD.” Unfortunately that ZEAL was misdirected and they MISSED out on the Messiah that had fulfilled the Scriptures and that was staring them in the face. Therefore, Paul’s heartbeat was to see his people recognize Jesus as Lord and be saved from the penalty and power of sin.
The truth of the matter is we ALL need to be saved because our sinful rebellion against God and His Word has left us UNRIGHTEOUS! That’s the bad news. The GOOD NEWS is...

Christ’s Righteousness is the Answer for Everyone’s Unrighteousness (vv. 3-7)

Notice Romans 10:3-4
Romans 10:3–4 NKJV
For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
It seems many of the Jewish people had misunderstood the intention of the Law. Some attempted to establish their “own righteousness” instead of SUBMITTING to the righteousness of God.
As a result they may have appeared to be righteous in the eyes of the fellow Jews and religious mentors, but in the eyes of God their righteousness was still “filthy rags” in the sight of God.
Let me use a March Madness illustration by Tony Evans. He says about this passage:

Consider a game of basketball. Two guys take shots to win the game: the first guy misses the rim completely, an air ball; the second guy puts up a shot that rattles around, nearly goes in, but still misses. Which shot is of greater value? Neither. There’s a set standard for scoring (the ball must go through the hoop), and both guys missed it. The worst thing in the world is thinking that just because your ball went around the rim, spiritually speaking, it went in.

The standard is that the ball must go through the hoop for the points to count. You don’t get points for almost going in.
The same is true in life. God has a standard and that standard is Jesus Christ…that standard is perfection. We’ve all fallen short of that standard!
Romans 3:23 NKJV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
That’s the bad news. The GOOD NEWS is that Christ fulfilled the Law! He never sinned. He offers to exchange His righteousness for our sin!
2 Corinthians 5:21 NKJV
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
We are ALL unrighteous! We have all SINNED and fallen short of God’s glory and we will be judged accordingly…UNLESS we hide in the righteousness of Christ and instead of being judged based upon our sin, we are judged based upon His righteousness!
Now notice Romans 10:5-7
Romans 10:5–7 NKJV
For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of the law, “The man who does those things shall live by them.” But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ down from above) or, “ ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).
I love what Tony Evans says about this passage:
The Tony Evans Study Bible (Chapter 10)
The righteousness that comes from faith (10:6) is not difficult or complicated. The righteousness of the law is hard, always making us wonder whether we’ve done enough. It makes us ask, Who will go up to heaven? (10:6) or Who will go down into the abyss? (10:7), because we want to have some assurance from beyond the grave. But somebody has already come from heaven and gotten up from the grave. In Jesus you have a gospel message that is in your heart (10:8).
Notice what Paul says next in Romans 10:8-10
Romans 10:8–10 NKJV
But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
We find from this Scripture that...

Everyone Can be Saved (vv. 8-10)

The recognition and trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior is as close as one’s genuine heart belief in Christ and genuine confession of Jesus as the Risen Lord and one’s personal Savior!
Believing in the RISEN LORD is key here. Notice again Romans 10:9
Romans 10:9 NKJV
that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
Why is this so important? 1 Corinthians 15:17 reminds us that a dead Savior is NO Savior. Christ has risen and therefore He alone is worthy to be Lord!
1 Corinthians 15:17 CSB
And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.
Trust in an ordinary man, that didn’t rise victoriously over death, hell, and the grave, leaves us hopelessly in our sins. But trust in the RISEN LORD sets us free from our sins and gives us HOPE for eternity!
Think about what Paul said regarding Abraham’s faith and how righteousness was given to him, and how we can have that same faith in a Risen Savior and be recipients of that same righteousness…Romans 4:22-5:1
Romans 4:22–5:1 CSB
Therefore, it was credited to him for righteousness. Now it was credited to him was not written for Abraham alone, but also for us. It will be credited to us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification. Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Faith in the resurrection and the Resurrected Christ is ESSENTIAL! As the Faithlife Study Bible says:
…faith in the resurrection is essential. The resurrection also shows that God vindicated Christ from the shame of the cross.
That leads us to our last point...

Everyone is Saved the Same Way (vv. 11-13)

Notice Romans 10:11-13
Romans 10:11–13 NKJV
For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
It doesn’t matter if you are a Jew or if you are a Gentile, to be saved you must recognize Jesus is Lord and call on Him to be YOUR Savior!
It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor, to be saved you must recognize Jesus is Lord and call on Him to be YOUR Savior!
It doesn’t matter if you have been religious, agnostic, atheist all your life, to be saved you must recognize Jesus is Lord and call on Him to be YOUR Savior!
It doesn’t matter if you are a man or a woman, to be saved you must recognize Jesus is Lord and call on Him to be YOUR Savior!
It doesn’t matter if you are young, or if you are old, to be saved you must recognize Jesus is Lord and call on Him to be YOUR Savior!
It doesn’t matter if you come to church every Sunday, or once a year, to be saved you must recognize Jesus is Lord and call on Him to be YOUR Savior!
It doesn’t matter if you are Republican, Democrat, or Independent: to be saved you must recognize Jesus is Lord and call on Him to be YOUR Savior!
It doesn’t matter if you are FORD or CHEVY, to be saved you must recognize Jesus is Lord and call on Him to be YOUR Savior!
It doesn’t matter if you are Carolina, Duke, State or Wake Forest: to be saved you must recognize Jesus is Lord and call on Him to be YOUR Savior!
EVERYONE IS SAVED THE SAME WAY…THROUGH TRUSTING IN AND CALLING UPON THE RESURRECTED SON OF GOD!
The righteousness of God is AVAILABLE to everyone, but EVERYONE must receive it the same way…BY FAITH!
F. F. Bruce said: The righteousness which God imparts is open without distinction to all men and women of faith, whether they are Jews or Gentiles. His saving mercy is lavished with ‘undistinguishing regard’: all who call on him will receive it.
The Holman NT Commentary puts it this way:
Paul would have the church remember the centrality of the resurrection in the gospel, and orders his words in a helpful A-B-B-A format (possibly) to aid retention as well as teach correct theology:
A Confess: If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,”
B Believe: and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
B Believe: For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified,
A Confess: and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.
What the heart believes, the mouth confesses.
The most important question we all must answer is “Have YOU recognized YOUR need to be right with God, and then TRUSTED in the LIVING SAVIOR, the Lord Jesus Christ, to MAKE YOU RIGHT with God?”
Nothing else matters!
