Ransom, and I are reading a book right now that we've been reading during lent. It is set from the perspective of a young man living in Jerusalem during the weeks leading up to Easter. He doesn't believe in Jesus and the perspective shown by the book and illustrated in the pages has been so helpful for me to get a sense of the power and what it must have been like for Jesus to enter into Jerusalem.
Today, we gave a relatively meagure performance as we walked in to our church building.
Imagine an entire city worth of people ushering Jesus into a city. That was built specifically around the church building.
Imagine the electricity that would have been filling the crowd as an entire city,
an entire nation's worth of people, is clamoring to shout the praises of someone in which they would like to place their hope.
Imagine the voices of parents, holding children close and shout over the yells of the crowd. That's the guy that's the man who's going to save us.
Imagine the old men and women who have been waiting a long time sitting back observing and saying this is the messiah we've been waiting for you. See, Jesus was coming into Jerusalem to become king, the donkey was a sign of this add donkey bit. Jesus was carrying quite a bit of clout at this very moment.
We know this because he's able to pull off something that no one else could have done the story that ransom and I have been reading concerns. Young man who is trying to treat track down a little bit of money that has been stolen? From the temple Treasury, it's a big deal the concerns the death of whoever stole the money all throughout the book.
It is highlighted just how sacred the temple courts R and how dangerous it is 2 disobey. The rules gentiles, who enter the court of women would be put to death. Women entered the court of men would be put to death.
And overseeing all of this, it's a wicked high priest, a powerful high priest named caiphus. We're practically foaming at the mouth. Looking at an opportunity to kill Jesus and what does Jesus do he walks straight into these temple courts grabs the money boxes holds them high over his head smashes them to the ground.
The fact that Jesus pull this off without dying that very moment. It is a true sign that these people were planning on crowning king within a week. These people were ready to place their hope in him all of their hopes would either rise or fall on whether or not Jesus became king, here's the.
Profound surprise nature of the gospel Jesus did become king that week, but his throne room was a cross. His throne was across in his throne room was abandoned by all these followers. On the day of his enthronament, what about all these people's hopes were there hopes dashed.
Somewhere some thought that their worst enemy was Rome, the death of Jesus meant the end of a hope to be liberated, what holy week teaches us that Jesus wasn't simply interested in liberating his people from Rome. You see Rome is just one of many evil empires in history, behind every evil Empire. Is a puppet master pulling the strings?
A Beast behind the curtain disguising itself, has something good and true and beautiful. But in actuality, seeking to destroy people all over the world, Jesus came to wrestle with that Beast, Jesus came to pin satan to Bind him. Jesus came to defeat death, which was satan's greatest tool against Mankind.
Not only that, Jesus came to a tone for the sins of the world, the opportunity that the people in Israel had in the weeks and months and years that followed was an opportunity to reorder their hopes. It was an opportunity to see Jesus with fresh eyes as truly God and truly man. It was an opportunity to place their faith in a God.
Who can do so much more than defeat the Romans? He can defeat death. We have an opportunity today to reorder our hopes today I had the honor performing the funeral for my friend chase Galloway.
Chase is a 13-year-old boy who spent. Every moment of his life from the womb and beyond totally affected by the curse of sin, his mind and body were damage in such a way from his infancy, that he never experienced the fullness, I'm being human. The timing of his memorial service occurring on Palm Sunday was not lost on me.
Imagine if we could take the case of chase Jesus on Palm Sunday 2000 years ago, Jesus, Jesus, I know that you're going to be king and we know that you can defeat the Romans. Is there anything you can do about this? Boy chase his greatest enemies in a government, his greatest enemy is the cursive.
Send his whole life is up ended because of sin Jesus, he has died. What will you do about it twitch Jesus would reply to us. This is why I came the demons, it sucked this little boy's destruction from his earliest moments in the womb.
I will send them to hell this death. It has finally caught him. I will catch it any effects this curse do you speak of I'm here to repeal it to push it back.
Far as the cruise is found Jesus slaughtered death, that is why we can say where death is your victory where oh death is your stink? This week as we walk through holy week. I want you to see the work of Jesus.
As a profound one to punch to all that is evil, the first swing looks like weakness is Jesus is crucified on a cross, but in that very moment he is dealing a death blow to death itself to the penalty send as he himself is bearing our sins in his body on the tree second swing. Will come in power. On the 1st day of the new creation as Jesus, the Son of God the freshly crowned king of the world birth of a tomb, I couldn't hold him.
Here's our final thought for today. Jesus is king and he has used his authority to rescue you from all that enslaves you, he uses his authority. To do the necessary work to forgive you of your sin uses his authority for good for the sake of the world, this is the Jesus we worship should cause us to see what's that blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
