Matthew 5:1–10

Backstory on passage

Jesus had just went to the synagogues in Galilee and healing the sick.

Read 4:25

1: Poor in Spirit

Verse 3

The word poor has two aspects to it

being dependent. You are forced to rely on God in a deeper way.

There is blessings in being spiritually poor which means humbling ourselves before the Lord knowing that we can not do what is right on our own and we can’t save ourselves from eternal hell

And thats where the kingdom of Heaven comes in. Only those who Humble themselves before God can go to the Gods kingdom, heaven.

2: Blessing in Mourning

verse 4

This mourning is a Godly sorrow. A mourning for there sins

They shall be comforted. Only those who mourn can truly understand being comforted and God says that He will comfort those who mourn repenting for our sins

3: blessing in Meekness

Verse 5

Some people say Meekness is weakness but thats not true. Jesus was said that He was meek.

Meek mean Humble, gentle.

We need to humble ourselves before God.

Humble is a key part of all this. God loves the humble

For they shall inherit the earth. those who are in Gods will it say shall inherit the earth

Psalm 37:9 For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.

4:Blessings in Hungering And Thirsting fore Righteousness

verse 6

Psalm 42:1 “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, So panteth my soul after thee, O God.”

We need to be so Hungry for God that we want him more then anything

have you never been so thirsty that you cant think of anything STORY

And they shall be filled. 2x

If we read Gods word and hunger for righteousness God says He will fill us

5:Blessings In Being Merciful

Verse 7

mercy is getting what you don’t deserve.

A way we can do that is forgiving those you have offended us.

Sometimes it’s hard especially when they are someone you don’t really like

but those are the ones that need the most mercy from us.

For they shall obtain mercy.

Sometimes we think our sins are not as bad as others are

but if we want mercy we first must be merciful.

6: Blessing of a Pure Heart

Verse 8

when we have a pure heart we get the blessing to see life through a Christ centered view

How can we get a pure heart?

By prayer and meditation on Gods words.

when we are completely focused on God and his word we 1: won’t have time to defile our minds with sinful thoughts and 2: we won’t want to

Isaiah 26:3 “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on thee: Because he trusteth in thee.”

7: Blessing of being a peacemaker

verse 9

Jesus didn’t say blessed are the “Pacifists” He says blessed are the Peacemakers.Those who make peace

We can not have peace by ourselves though man and man can not have peace except through the blood of Christ

They shall be called the Children of God.

the world will know that we are the children of God by our peace and by our love

as it talks about John 13
