It Is Finished
It Is Finished
Happy Resurrection Day!:
Don’t forget we are continuing the two services indefinitely
Amazon:
I am often amazed at the efficiency and quickness of Amazon
Call me old fashioned but I remember when you had to wait for months to get things in the mail
I’m still waiting on cereal action figures to arrive that I sent off for in the early 90’s
How many of you remember when you could send enough cereal upc codes that they would eventually send you stuff
I had to look this up to make sure I wasn’t misremembering
One sight said you sometimes had to wait up to 18 months to get your prize
You can outgrow toys in 18 months
I’m waiting for Amazon to come up with yesterday delivery
You click confirm order and a ladies voice pops up and says
Good news Joel we sent that package to you yesterday
Amazon Telepathy
It says in Matthew 6 that God knows what we need before we even ask it
Amazon is getting really close
We are here to celebrate the Death Burial and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus
Without the Resurrection:
The gospel would be meaningless
Forgiveness of sins would be hopeless
Present life would be joyless
We would all still be living in darkness
Praise be to God who overcame death when he raised his Son back to life, That we could be risen with Him into a new life
A thought about the Resurrection:
Charles Colson, an advisor to Richard Nixon, said the following: I know the resurrection is a fact, and Watergate proved it to me. How? Because 12 men testified they had seen Jesus raised from the dead, then they proclaimed that truth for 40 years, never once denying it. Every one was beaten, tortured, stoned and put in prison. They would not have endured that if it weren't true. Watergate embroiled 12 of the most powerful men in the world-and they couldn't keep a lie for three weeks. You're telling me 12 apostles could keep a lie for 40 years? Absolutely impossible.
Peter Denied Jesus on the night of Jesus’ death, then some years after the resurrection was crucified upside down on a cross because of His commitment to Jesus
Jesus was betrayed by Judas
Falsely accused
whipped
beaten
mocked spit on
Made of public humiliation
And hung on a cross
25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
It is Finished:
Everything that had ever happened in History came down to this moment
Full-filling well over 300 prophecies
From the beginning of man’s sin through Adam
The wages of sin that required death as a payment
Hebrews 9 says that without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin
For thousands of years before Jesus came
Redemption was incomplete
It was just temporary
Leviticus tells us that once a year on the day of atonement a sin offering was to be made for that year
Every single year you were reminded of the sins you committed for the year
An everlasting reminder of the consequences of your shortcomings
Yesterday with the kids in the morning, I’m so thankful for His grace in my life
Beau prayed for his salamander
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
When Jesus took his last breath, We became alive
When Jesus proclaimed it is finished and gave up himself
He paid the price that we owed and our life began
In John 19 When he says “It is Finished”:
That phrase is the greek word
Teleo-
to bring to a close, to finish, to end
passed, finished
to perform, execute, complete, fulfil, (so that the thing done corresponds to what has been said, the order, command etc.)
with special reference to the subject matter, to carry out the contents of a command
Much like in English we tenses of verbs:
I’m going to finish that project (future)
I’m currently finishing that project (present)
I have finished that project (Past)
Perfect Passive of Teleo is the greek word
Tetelastai meaning that it has an ongoing effect
or in perpetuity
Tetelestai had multiple uses in around the same meaning:
Servant reporting to their master: tetelestai I have completed the the work that has been assigned to me
In Business an official would sign Tetelestai
Sarah and I sold our house last year
You make the deal
Agree
Inspections and paperwork
Sing papers and the title offices and go through all hoops
when that money finally hits your bank account Tetelestai
A prisoner serving out their sentence they were the judge would write on their legal documents
Someone might ask you how you got out of prison
tetelestai
Your sentence was paid for, you were finally free
Tetelestai- [the atonement] has been accomplished, completely, once and for all time."
What did He Finish?
Jesus came to the earth to seek and save which was lost
To set liberty to the captives to heal the broken hearted
To give sight to the blind
Jesus’ Life on earth wasn’t truly finished until He gave it up completely
Becoming sin, becoming sickness, becoming diseased, becoming abandoned by God
Galatians 3 says “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the Law of sin and death having become a curse for us (for it is written cursed is anyone who hangs on a tree)”
He completed the transaction for your sin
He conquered death and the grave
He bought our forgiveness
Our healing
Our peace
Our joy
We bring glory to the Father
11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.
12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
Jesus said that those who believe on Him would do the same works that He did.
We often focus on the miracles He performed, and I believe they are included.
However, Jesus glorified His Father while He was on the earth, and Jesus finished the work the Father gave Him to do
Jesus being fully man and fully God, Pleaded with the Father
42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”
We often plead with the Father:
Maybe not with our words but with our actions
I want my own way
I want to do this the way I see fit
Let me live my life how I want to live it
Without him we make a mess of ourselves
We Have to fully submit to His will
Just as much as Jesus completed the finished work on the cross when he said it is finished
You can say the same thing in you heart.
It is finished:
I’m done with the things of the past
I’m done with my old way of doing things
It’s no longer I who live but Christ in me
It is finished
I’m leaving my old ways behind, the past that wants to keep occupying keeping my future, it is finished
That drug addiction or thing that I know is killing me but I choosing comfort over freedom it is finished!
I’m finished living for myself
Watch what he does for you:
I had to make this decision in my own life
I knew God and Jesus
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
It is finished I’m done choosing myself
I’m choosing to Bring Glory to Him this morning
Band:
Communion:
This is a Holy moment
28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.
Give you an opportunity:
On Thursday I was praying and I felt very strongly that there are people in here that think it’s to late to accomplish the things God put on your heart when you were younger
29 For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.
Simply takes an act of repentance
Don’t miss your time this morning
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
1. Believe in Him a step of faith
Take another step of faith Commit to Him and watch what happens in your life
2. Get out of your chair and meet me down here
