Text:
Christ’s Sacrifice Once for All
10 For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. 2 Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? 3 But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
5 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said,
“Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired,
but a body have you prepared for me;
6 in burnt offerings and sin offerings
you have taken no pleasure.
7 Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God,
as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’ ”
8 When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), 9 then he added, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second. 10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
11 And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,
16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them
after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws on their hearts,
and write them on their minds,”
17 then he adds,
“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”
18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.
The Full Assurance of Faith
19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
26 For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 29 How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
32 But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, 33 sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. 34 For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. 35 Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. 37 For,
“Yet a little while,
and the coming one will come and will not delay;
38 but my righteous one shall live by faith,
and if he shrinks back,
my soul has no pleasure in him.”
39 But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls. [1]
Sermon Body:
1. The Shadow – Vs. 1-4
4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
a. I remember Austin’s first reaction when he saw his shadow for the first time as a kid. He stood pointing at it, muttering in amazement as he tried to figure out what it was.
b. I remember trying to explain to him that it was a reflection of himself as the light poured over him. Course, trying to explain this to a toddler is easier said than done! 
c. Somewhere I still have a picture of him as he stood pointing to his shadow. It is an adorable picture.
d. But a shadow is just that right, a shadow. It is not the real thing but a merely a reflection of it.
e. The same is true of the law. He law was a shadow of that which was to come
f. The sacrifices were a shadow of the ultimate sacrifice which was to come.
g. The law, the sacrifices could never do that which Christ and His sacrifice could.
h. The law was a shadow.
i. The law could never be kept perfectly kept.
j. The law, the sacrifices could never make complete atonement for sin.
k. They were a shadow. It was not the real thing but a shadow of the real thing.
l. Thus daily sacrifices had to be continually offered because they could not do what the REAL THING, Christ could do. The sacrifices could not do what THE sacrifice could.
m. They were not the real thing, but the shadow of the real thing.
n. If they were the real thing…there would have been no need for Christ to come.
o. But the law could not accomplish this. It was a shadow of the one who would come and do what the law could not.
p. Think about it. No matter hard Austin may have tried, he could not touch his Shadow, he could not hold it or interact with it in any way. It simply changed or shifted depending on his actions. But it was not his actions, only the reflection of it.
q. This was the law. It was a shadow. Consequentially the form casting the shadow stepped into creation.
2. The Will – Vs. 5-10
5 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said,
“Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired,
but a body have you prepared for me;
6 in burnt offerings and sin offerings
you have taken no pleasure.
10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
a. Jesus stepped into the world, the reality, the real thing, not the shadow, steps into the world.
b. Not to do more of the same, more of the ritual sacrifices and offerings…He came to do the will of God…He came to complete the law, to do what the law could not, to show the REALITY of what the shadow pointed to.
c. The sacrifices themselves did not please God. It was not the sacrifices themselves that God desired.
d. It was the heart of faith, of repentance, of worship that prompted the sacrifice that God desired.
e. It was the heart that desired to do the will of God, to please Him, to walk in righteousness and holiness that pleased God.
f. Jesus came to set aside the law and replace it with something better.
g. Through a heart that was completely submissive and obedient to God, He came.
h. He came to offer the once for all, perfect sacrifice in order to eliminate the shadow of the imperfect and replace it with the perfect.
3. The Once For All Sacrifice – Vs. 11-14
14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
a. The priests had to offer sacrifices daily, for their own sins as well as the sins of others.
b. These sacrifices, could never fully take away sins.
c. They were a shadow
d. They had to be offered time and time again because they could never fully take away sins.
e. BUT
f. JESUS…by a single offering….perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
g. By ONE SINGLE OFFERING, Jesus offers forgiveness, cleansing, and perfecting of those who repent and place their faith in Him.
h. By His one sacrifice, He is able to cleanse ALL sins for ALL time.
i. No longer are daily sacrifices necessary or required, but all sins are covered in ONE sacrifice. Past. Present. Future. Covered. ONCE FOR ALL. For all time. Forever.
j. Such is the power of Jesus blood.
k. Such is the power of Jesus death.
l. Such is the power of Jesus Life.
m. That is the power of His resurrection.
n. No substitutes needed. No additions required. Not supplementing necessary.
o. Christ alone is sufficient and enough.
p. This once for all sacrifice has changed everything, so much so that the Holy Spirit bears witness.
4. The Witness – Vs. 15-18
18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.
a. The Holy Spirit declares that He will put his laws on our hearts, in our minds, and remember our sins no more.
b. The work of Jesus accomplishes this. The death, burial, and resurrection of the pure, innocent lamb of God makes it possible through our faith and repentance to obtain this forgiveness and new life.
c. It eliminates the need for sacrifices; it eliminates the need for the shadow, because the reality has come!
d. Christ did in one sacrifice what thousands upon thousands of sacrifices could never do.
e. He was the reality, not the shadow, and was therefore able to accomplish what the shadow, the law, the animal sacrifices could not.
This morning as we gather here to remember his resurrection, let us remember that.
Christ is the reality. They saw the shadow of that which was to come. We can look back and see both. But may we not get so focused on the shadow that we miss the real thing.
Christ died. He rose again in order to provide forgiveness and new life. Let’s claim that this morning as we worship Him
5. The Assurance – Vs. 19-25
24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
a. Because of this once for all sacrifice, because of what Christ has done, because of his death, burial, and resurrection, we have confidence to draw near to God.
b. We have the confidence and assurance that we are cleansed and clean before him.
c. We have the confidence that we have direct access to God.
d. We also have the challenge to hold fast our confession, to not waiver, to not grow weary, but to remain faithful and steadfast.
e. We are challenged to encourage others, to motivate others, to continue to love and good works.
f. Because of what Christ has done, we are challenged to change and be different…
g. We are challenged to walk in faith
6. The Warning – Vs. 26-31
7. The Preserved – Vs. 32-39
37 For,
“Yet a little while,
and the coming one will come and will not delay;
38 but my righteous one shall live by faith,
and if he shrinks back,
my soul has no pleasure in him.”
39 But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls. [2]
