His Teaching and understanding of the scriptures:
(One of my favorite stories)
Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom. And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, but supposing him to be in the group they went a day’s journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances, and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.
A. 50 Parables
B. Illuminates old testament Poetry.
C. His use of Proverbs
D. Teachings of Kingdom of God
E. Direct Instruction
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Transition: This is what he did on earth. It would be impossible to relate him to any other teacher of the day because his actions, and understanding of scripture was far beyond anyone that has ever walked face on this earth. It was as if he actually took part in the process of writing the whole thing. He was the very author himself. Yet that is not where his story ends, and we cannot even simply minimize his ministry to this.
Condemned & Crucified
Condemned & Crucified
and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.
Condemned:
Betrayed by Judas
Denied by his closest friends (We have to recognize the staunch change in their posture after seeing the risen Christ)
Mocked and Beaten by Jewish Sanhedrin (Religious Leaders)
Tried before Pilate (Roman Law)
Mocked by King Herod (Jewish Political Leaders)
Exchanged for a robber
Crucified:
The most gruesome death in the ancient world
hanging their to die for all to see.
Transition: Praise God this is not where the story ends… Now we are up to date on the conversation with our two companions. Now… We are looking at the story in real time. What do they say to Jesus about the current events.
Resurrected:
Resurrected:
Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.
They are dumbfounded:
Jesus is alive
The very people who are mourning the loss of their teacher, friend, Messiah.
Can you imagine what is going through their minds?
Here is the reality Jesus being resurrected changes everything!
Here is the reality Jesus being resurrected changes everything!
Without it he is simply a moral teacher vs. with it sin and death are conquered.
Transition: If their amazement that he may be alive isnt enough for you and you are still unclear that is ok…. Thankfully Jesus clarifies for us and them who he truly is.
The Christ
The Christ
And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”
The Christ:
The Messiah
The Deliverer
OT Prophesy of the Christ Suffering
But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed.
The Truth:
The only way for God to restore his relationship with mankind was to give up of himself.
Jesus is illuminating this for them.
This is the Gospel,…. God cares so much about his creation that he will hold up his end of the deal and ours to restore our relationship.
Transition: This has a personal reality for us in this room today. Jesus is your Christ if you accept it. your deliver.
Confirmed by Scripture:
Confirmed by Scripture:
And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
Jesus supernaturally reveals scripture to us:
We see this in all the gospels.
Jesus is literally helping them understand.
Knowledge of who God is leads to faith, and faith leads to greater understanding of who God is.
When we put our trust in Jesus = Faith…
It all becomes clear
Closing:
Closing:
Concerning Jesus? Who is he to you?
Yes he is a prophet…
Yes this is who he was in history
The Christ for you
Dig into the word of God…. (don’t take my word for it)
