And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Intro:
Paul begins his letter writing to the church at Colosse. Paul had been hearing about their faith in Christ Jesus and the love that they had for all saints (Col 1:4).
The cause of their faith and their love for all the saints Paul states:
Because of the hope laid up for you in heaven.
Let me stop there because when we come to the realization of what the Lord has done for us, when we realize he made a way for us to inherit eternal life, when we form a relationship with God our faith and our love grows. Not only that but our love for one another should grow right along with our love for God, because if we love God we will love one another. If we love God and we are his children then we should replicate the kind of love that he had when he walked this earth, it was an unconditional love. So my faith grows and my love for everyone grows because of the hope (expectation) that I have laid up for me in heaven.
See some of you are struggling in that area because you are basing it off of your own works. You are not saved by works, you are saved by faith and faith produces works. Works can never produce salvation, it is not part of the equation. That is why a whole lot of Christians are going to find themselves in the lake of fire. But the right equation is faith (dependency on Christ and Christ alone, allowing Him to make the change in you) produces a pattern of good works, resulting in salvation of our souls. Because without faith it is impossible to please God. Faith comes by hearing, hearing by the word of God. They heard the word of God they believed the word of God.
Secondly Paul states in 1:6 that this same word that they heard, is bearing fruit all over the world. In other-words your salvation is not just an isolated incident. The word of God, the good news of the gospel Paul says is still changing lives today, we can say in 2024 that the gospel still has the power to change lives if people would accept it and believe it in faith.
Paul said that the moment they HEARD and UNDERSTOOD the truth about God’s wonderful grace, it was a life changer for them. And herein lies the problem, there are many people that do no understand, there are some that have heard but don’t understand it, there are others that have not heard, but is there anybody in here tonight that can count it a blessing that not only did God extended to you a chance to hear it, but that you understood God’s wonderful grace.
Well preacher I hear you but what is God’s wonderful grace? I’m glad you asked. John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
If we be real honest in here, most of us in here can testify that we don’t deserve to be saved. But it was the grace of God that saved us, even in our worse state, God had mercy on us, he had pity on us even when we deserved to die. Grace says that you were given a gift and you didn’t deserve the gift, you didn’t earn it, you didn’t earn your salvation, the Lord granted it to you.
God’s wonderful grace that Paul speaks of is simply Jesus. Grace was extended to us by Jesus’ death, through his burial, through his resurrection, grace is extended to us by the preaching of the gospel and believing it in faith, grace is extended to us that when we believe that Jesus died for us, our sins are forgiven us. Grace is extended to us that when we take on his name through water baptism in His name, he then fills us with the Holy Ghost. Grace is extended to us that once we receive the Holy Ghost and we walk with God and God changes us and we are born again we receive eternal life. And we need to come to a realization that none of us deserved it, but all the grateful people ought to give God the praise because he choose you, He called you out, Jesus saved you, He changed your life!
4. Let’s pivot to the main text:
Paul then says:
Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
The NASB says “He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son.”
a. He rescued us from the domain, we were living in darkness and He rescued us. And then he transferred, he took us from here, and brought us over to his side……he transferred me. Just tell your neighbor he transffered me.
b. There should be some gratefulness in the house tonight that he took you from where you use to be and brought you over to his side.
5. Paul further elborates and says in the next verse: Col 1:14
In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
a. To redeem us means that he bought us, and he bought us with his blood, we been redeemed by the blood and not only did he purchase us but he gave us the forgiveness of sins, he cleaned us up and washed us in the blood.
6. Let’s skip down, Col 1:20
And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;
Let’s End this:
For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
Last scripture:
Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
a. Every charge that was against you in heaven, when Jesus died for you he cancelled the debt that was against us.
b. Because the scripture says that “the wages or payment for sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ.
c. He blotted out the the charges that was against us and that was contrary to us, and took it out of the way.
d. And the scriptures said that he took your charges, he took my charges, and nailed it to his cross!!! He took every sin and nailed it to the cross. What is the it, that he nailed to the cross. Tell your neighbor He took my “It” and nailed it to the cross. You might have an “it” right now…..but Jesus died and nailed your it to the cross!!
e. Finally, the bible says he disarmed the rules and authorities, those demonic rulers and authorities that had you bound, those demonic devils that was causing people to live in sin, he disarmed them….meaning that they can no longer have victory over you.
f. He triumphed over them…..how…..when he said “It Is Finished”.
