Matthew Ch 21 VS 18-22
Matthew Ch 21 VS 18-22
Okay so before we get into this we all know that it is passion week, aka holy week
Now what is the purpose behind it ? its the build up before Jesus died on the cross and rose again from the dead
so before we get started i would like to just kind of talk about some little fact/ details about this
A few months ago we went through the Gospel of Luke
Now in Luke i had to teach on Jesus and His triumphal entry
this is significant to us because this in the Gospel of Matthew Happens right before Jesus passes by the Fig tree
so lets brake it down really quick
1. Jesus’ heart of humility ( Matthew Ch 21: 1-11)
- the triumphal entry ;
Zechariah 9:9 “9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.”
okay , Jesus himself was the perfect example of Humility
he was humble ,
did any of you listen to Lance’s study ?
He shared some crazy statistics about the queen of England and How royal she was and what it took to put together her little swearing in for becoming queen
all kinds of royal craziness went down , the amount of resources used for her swearing in was insane
anyways that wasn’t Jesus , Jesus wasn’t flashy , he was humble and loving
He came into Jerusalem riding on a colt ,
Anybody know what a colt signified back in these days ?
It was a symbol of Humility
and not only a symbol of Humility but it also signified who Jesus was and what His purpose here was
he was a servant that signified peace , in a few days he would show who he was as a servant on the cross by dying for our Sins
Again Jesus was Humble
He was Selfless
Philippians 2:3 “3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.”
Jesus and His actions were always selfless not self seeking
he could of acted like royalty because he was the Son of the Living God
but he didn’t
he came in on a donkey
He was Generous
Acts 20:35 “35 I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
we saw earlier in the gospel just how generous Jesus was
he Had a heart for people and He took care of them and He loved on them
Jesus Himself was a giver, he was going to Give His Life for those who did not deserve it
Romans 5:8 “8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
the greatest gift is the gift of Life
He was Obedient
Jesus was obedient
the perfect example of obedience
He sacrificed Himself when He had the power to just avoid death
He chose life for us through His death
Philippians 2:8 “8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.”
Jesus Looked out for others to the point of Death
John 15:13 “13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”
Jesus took the hit for all of us, all of us who didn’t deserve it
Again Jesus was a Humble Man
Again Jesus Lived out this Humility through
His Selflessness , Through His Generosity , and through His obedience
2. Jesus’ heart for purity (Matthew Ch 21: 12-17 ) ( Read )
the temple
people were destroying and defiling the temple
a place of prayer turned into a place of trade and selling
people were soliciting to the congregation trying to make a buck
people were taking advantage of others in a place that was suppose to be for worshiping the lord
the temple is a depiction of the nation of Israel being corrupt from within
it can also be viewed as our bodies here on earth
they are temples for the Lord not for ourselves
1 Corinthians 3:16–17 “16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.”
what are we putting into our bodies ,
what are we seeing ?
what are we hearing ?
what are we doing ?
we are called to be examples of who God is and we do that using our temples which are our bodies
taking care of ourselves spiritually is not for us, its for others to See God using us
they experience God through us
Passion week is the week to remember Jesus and who He is , and not only that but a week to Live that out through our own temples
our on lives that are put on display for His Kingdom
Again Jesus wants us to be pure in our minds and in our Hearts
Okay so this next section is what we want to Get into , this is what happened on Tuesday of Passion Week and thats today
3. Jesus Heart for faith and Prayer ( Matthew Ch 21:18-22 )
The Fig Tree withered
The lesson of the Withered Fig tree
the fig tree
what did it represent ?
