He is Risen!
Matthew 27:62–66 ESV
62 The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63 and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard.
Matthew 28:1–10 ESV
1 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. 5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” 8 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”
Today is one of hopefully 365 days that we remember what Jesus did for us, but today we don’t just remember We celebrate today because our savior has risen from the dead and conquered death, the two primary objectives that Jesus was sent here to accomplish, and all because he loves us so much! Not only that, but because He said He would accomplish it, and He’s a God of His word.
Genesis 3:15 ESV
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
There is no doubt this is a prophecy of Jesus’ ultimate defeat of Satan. God announced that Satan would wound the Messiah (you shall bruise His heel), but the Messiah would crush Satan with a mortal wound (He shall bruise your head). It was as if God could not wait to announce His plan of salvation, to bring deliverance through the one known as the Seedof the woman.
The heel is the part within the serpent’s reach. Jesus, in taking on humanity, brought Himself near to Satan’s domain so Satan could strike Him.
“That bruised heel is painful enough. Behold our Lord in his human nature sore bruised: he was betrayed, bound, accused, buffeted, scourged, spit upon. He was nailed to the cross; he hung there in thirst and fever, and darkness and desertion” (Spurgeon).
In the human body when someone dies, the blood in the body settles to its’ lowest point and causes, what looks like a deep bruise. This means that as Jesus hung on the cross after he stated the words “It is finished” and breathed his last breath, what happened to Him physically in his heals was a physical manifestation of what God the father predicted in Genesis 3:15.
In that moment Satan believed he had triumphed, but three days later when Jesus rose from the dead, He dealt Satan a mortal wound by bruising his head.
A mortal wound does not kill instantly, but it does mean the one with that wound has an expiration date.
As I said, Jesus had two main objectives to accomplish at the end of his time on earth. The shedding of his blood and his resurrection. Something that he warned his disciples would happen 3 times.
We, as sinful humans, needed Him to shed his blood.
Hebrews 9:22 ESV
22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.
We are born into this world sinners, separated from God because of our sin. The Lord saw this as problem 1 and from before the foundations of this world, He knew how he would accomplish it! And he did this for us!
1 Peter 1:18–21 ESV
18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you 21 who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
Jesus had to become a man, but he couldn’t stop being God, so, John 1:14
John 1:14 ESV
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Because man had sinned, a man had to die to pay the price. But not just pay the price, Jesus also set out to destroy the one who had power over death.
Hebrews 2:14 ESV
14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,
He paid the price, settled our debt and released all who would believe from Satan’s grasp on them. But the process wasn’t complete. He had to rise again, if we were to rise again with him on the day He calls us home!
Romans 6:3–11 ESV
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
We celebrate Jesus’ resurrection today for several reasons!
He is the Son of the Living God who is powerful enough to conquer death!
We celebrate that He wasn’t just powerful enough, but that he really did it!
Every other socalled god or prophet has remains still residing in their grave.
Jesus tomb is empty! He Has risen, a fact that Satan and the world has been trying to cover up or discredit sense it all happened.
Lastly, we celebrate his resurrection because it means taht one day we will be resurrected with a glorified body to live with him in the new earth and spend eternity with him, all because he lives today!
May we all live our lives to God as He does!
Let’s pray!
