What is the work of the cross?

John 19:30 ESV
When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Matthew 26:26–28 ESV
Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Sins - Harmatia - Archery term - Missing the Mark
God made everything perfect | Adam and Eve Sinned and created Seperation between us and a Holy God.
In the OT there was a sacrifical system set up, so God’s people could keep favour with God.
Day of Atonement [reparation or expiation for sin] = Lots of things would happen to cleanse them of their sin for a year.
Main one - 2 goats - One without blemish - Perfect and a normal one.
Slay it and sprinkle the blood of the Mercy Seat - Which is the tabarnacle - Where God Dwelled - so a priest could enter the place once a year and be with God.
Other goat - Sins are confessed on it and its run into wilderness (Scape Goat) - Someone would follow to make sure it could never come back. [usually push it off a cliff]
Don’t want disgusting goat to come back.
So one Goat Covered the mercy seat - One Goat took on their sin and was cast out.
When Jesus came - John baptist;
John 1:29 ESV
The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
Jesus - Fully God - Fully Human - Lived a Sinlsess life.
leading up to his crucifixtion he was whipped and beaten, spat on - and then led out of the camp.
he had to carry his cross - to a place called Golgatha - Nails in his hands, in his Feet and hurled into the sky on a cross.
They use to break the legs of those on a cross - but they came to Jesus and put a spear in his side - All of his blood poured out.
The two goats- one pure, one taking on our sin - Provided atonement for a year.
Jesus Christ - was both goats - He bore our sins, and was taken outside the camp and put on a cross to death.
And his sinless blood covers the place where God Dwells.
He went outside the camp and died - So that we could come back into the presence of God.
When Christ Died - The Curtain Tore from top to bottom - Signafying that the presence of God is now available to everyone.
His Blood washes you clean.
Access and Relationship with our Almighty God is now available to all. His Blood provides you forgiveness - this cross signafies the price being paid…When God now looks down, if you call Jesus as your lord and Saviour - He Sees Jesus and you, washed, white as snow.
Come take communion
2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
When we say come to the cross - come and put yourself on the altar - Ask for forgiveness for your sins - Declare Jesus as your lord and savour and He will make you NEW.
He wants a relationship with you - So much so he hung on a cross and while hanging there - He said 3 words…
IT IS FINISHED.
it’s done forever. Come to the cross.
