This will not be a long lesson.
As I was considering what would be purposeful during our time together in light of Easter, I began thinking about the depth of the story of the Bible… It truly is miraculous.
Jesus was single handedly fulfilling a promise made by God and held by God for centuries.
Some of you are coming from the service and others of you are entering the service.
Let todays passage be a reminder of God’s kindness to you by revealing truth to you, the truth that saved you from your sin- something you couldn’t do for yourself, and that truth securing your eternal life separate from the brokenness of this world...
Luke 24:13–35 ESV
13 That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. 22 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” 25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. 28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31 And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” 33 And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.
There is something miraculous happening here to make them not recognize Jesus… There seems to be a bigger lesson here-
Can we believe without seeing?
Here we see two disciples who had no reason to be disappointed...
They had seen and heard of the arrest, crucifixion, and death, and resurrection.
I love Jesus asking them a question about what they were discussing…
Jesus wants us to reveal our hearts to him…
The men knew...
Jesus’ name and hometown
that he was a prophet
they knew he was mighty in deed and word
They knew he was crucified
they knew he promised he would redeem Israel
AND they WERE hoping...
Luke 24:21 ESV
21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.
These men were discouraged because God did not do what they wanted Him to do…
All these men had to go off of was the reports from Peter, John, and the women…
However, they had yet to see Him.
*How patient is the Lord to listen to us share with him things he already knows...
Remember this passage.
Romans 10:17 ESV
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
This is another example of Jesus revealing the true problem- the heart of man, not the mind.
These men knew everything, but they didn’t believe with their whole heart!
I love their question to Jesus...
Luke 24:18 ESV
18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
in other words… Where have you been??
How do you think we would have responded if we were Jesus…?
Well, let me think… Thursday I....
Jesus’s response...
Luke 24:25–26 ESV
25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”
Foolish: senseless in the greek
Again we have another reference to “The Heart”
Then Jesus begins teaching, I am sure, one of the greatest Bible Studies ever taught.
Luke 24:27 ESV
27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
Think about this… He reminded them that “the Messiah,” talking about Himself, was...
the seed of the woman who’s heel was bruised
the blessing of Abraham to all the nations
the High Priest after the order of Melchizedek
The man who wrestled with Jacob
The lion of the tribe of Judah
The voice from the burning bush
The Passover Lamb
The prophet greater than Moses
The captian of the Lord’s army to Joshua
The ultimate kinsman-redeemer mentioned in Ruth
The son of David who was a King greater than David
The suffering Savior of Psalm 22
The Good shepherd of Psalm 23
The wisdom of proverbs and the lover of Song of Solomon
The princely messiah of Daniel who would establish a kingdom that would never end...
I COULD GO ON!
Here we see...
“The Savior, who knows the Word of God perfectly, because of His intimate union with the Spirit who is its Primary Author, expounded to them in broad outline all the Scriptures that referred to Him, from the first books of the Old Testament and right through to the end.” (unknown)
This is the key to understanding the Bible...
To see Jesus Christ in every page!
Luke 24:27 ESV
27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
Concerning Himself!

Luke 24:28–35 ESV
They didn’t even know who he was yet and they were urging him to stay with them!
Can you imagine the moment of the meal...
What do you think was significant about the breaking of the bread?
What about this breaking of bread would lead to their eyes being unveiled and them recognizing Jesus? Was there a significance?
We don’t have a reason to believe these two men were at the last supper… They probably weren’t.
However, think about the moment Jesus extends to them their piece of the broken bread...
They see his nail pierced hands. They recognize His knowledge of the word, the way he carries himself… etc
Could you imagine?
Now.... I love their response...
Once their eyes were opened, they couldn’t help but GO and TELL.
They had just walked seven miles and now they went back with no hesitation...
The more we receive the word of God, the more we desire to fellowship with the God. The more we fellowship with God, the more we will desire to talk about Him...
It isn’t about having a big head, but a burning heart...
Jesus, the risen saviour, is the fulfillment of all things...
John 1:1–5 ESV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
This is why we gather weekly.
This is why we are celebrating today.
Because of His submission to the father to suffer for us, we can receive what was promised- eternal.
Happy Easter.
