Introductino:
Q. What is the difference between arrogance and humility?
Q. What is the difference between low self-esteem and humility?
Humility = choice
Christ = right to walk pridefully
Son of God
Word in flesh
King of kings
But he chose to be humble
Adopt the “same attitude” (Phil 2:5)
Essential Doctrine: Christ’s Humiliation
Although God the Son was equal with God and worthy of all the glory God receives, He chose to be humble Himself by taking on human flesh. He left His glorious state and came in the likeness of sinful flesh (Rom. 8:2), and He experienced a humiliating death on a cross by becoming sin for us “so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God (2. Cor. 5:21; see also Phil. 2:6-8).
Essential Connection:
In this unit, we saw how the early church encountered opposition as believers spread the gospel. God used that persecution to scatter them, enabling them to take the gospel to locations beyond their borders to the rest of the world.
Summary:
The world tells us a certain level of arrogance is beneficial.
Jesus show us that humility honors God.
We can look to the way Jesus lived to learn how to be humble.
We can take small steps in putting others first.
Main Point: The Son of God provided salvation through His humiliation on earth.
The Son humbled Himself to take on flesh.
5 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.
6 Though he was God,
he did not think of equality with God
as something to cling to.
7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges;
he took the humble position of a slave
and was born as a human being.
When he appeared in human form,
15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.
Jesus came to dwell
Stepped down from throne; human skin and bone
Chose to experience humanity
The infinite came to be with the finite
Loves us = makes Himself like us
Q. How do people sometimes “exploit” their positions, using their names or popularity to get what they want?
We know people like this
Celebrities getting special treatment
Using can they can to get what they want
Q/ Why did Jesus coming as a man show humility? What does this reveal about God?
God chose to make HImself known
Why not another way?
Not kingly in an earthly manner
Not from wealthy family
Made Himself low to identity with us
Truly understands bc endured
Approachable to all.
The Son humbled Himself to take on flesh.
The Son of God humbled Himself to die on the cross.
8 he humbled himself in obedience to God
and died a criminal’s death on a cross.
Most wouldn’t choose humiliation
Crucifixion = non Romans (usually criminals)
Must humiliating death
Jesus begs the father (Matt 26:36-39).
He knew what He would endure
Lays aside own desire
Q. Why couldn’t Jesus’s death be more private or less humiliating?
Could’ve died another way
Any suffering is a sacrifice
But this had purpose
Undeniable bc public
Identified with lowest
Extremes are visible
Cross - embarasssment to many
Q. How should knowing Jesus chose humiliation for our sake impact our lives?
Move us to...
Gratitude
Humility
Model Him in how we...
Act
Talk
Treat others.
If Jesus chose this… we can to.
The Son humbled Himself to take on flesh.
The Son of God humbled Himself to die on the cross.
The Son of God humbled Himself to bring forth the victory.
21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
9 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor
and gave him the name above all other names,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
Q. Why would Jesus share His victory even though we haven’t earned it?
This is astounding
Best possible explanation: He loves us
Couldn’t earn it
Desensitized to John 3:16.
God loves us
Sent Son
We can know Him & be with Him
Victory = love
Q. One day, everyone will bow in worship to Jesus. How are you worshipping Him now?
Victory already accomplished
Hard to remember here and now
Focused on everything around us
But one day, every person
The Son humbled Himself to take on flesh.
The Son of God humbled Himself to die on the cross.
We get to do this now!
May we never waste breath praising anyone else
Christ Connection:
Jesus, the Son of God, humbled Himself by taking on flesh and living on the earth with His creation. Although He was without sin, Jesus gave up His life on the cross, paying the sin penalty owed by others. Jesus rose from the dead in victory. All who trust in Jesus are forgiven of their sin and are credited with His righteousness so that they too bring glory to the Father.
Head: How can understanding Christ’s humility help you understand His kindness and mercy?
Dangerous: God’s love = commonplace
Humility > extraordinary > authority > Lordship
Endured becoming human
Remember = maintaining grateful heart
Heart: Do you believe Christ understands you-your feelings and your struggles? How does this description in Philippians affect your understanding?
Knowing He knows and understands
Walked our roads, breathed our air
Understands bc He was like
Approach His compassion with confidence
Hands: What would it look like for you to humbly serve others instead of worrying about your name, desires, or popularity?
Not low self-esteem
Right view of ourselves in relation to God
Sons and daughters!
Confidently choose to act like Father
Humility = others first
Last word in argument
Not sacrificing conviction for popularity
Associating with “others”
Grow in humility each day
It is hard to be prideful when we consider that the King of kings chose humility.
