“Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” — Luke 23:34
“Today shalt thou be with Me in paradise.” — Luke 23:43
“Woman, behold thy Son.” — John 19:26
“My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?” — Mark 15:34
“I thirst.” — John 19:28
“It is finished.” — John 19:30
“Father, into Thy hands I commend My spirit.” — Luke 23:46
John 19:30 “When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”
Luke 23:46 “Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.”
Psalm 31:5 “Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.”
In everything Jesus did and said, He fulfilled the will of God and the word of God. Even in the throes of death, our Lord was sensible of His mission and pointed those around Him to the fulfillment of prophecy. Psalm 31 is a prayer of David in distress, full of trust in God, and in Luke 23 the Son of David echoes the same prayer:
Observation
1. The Greek word translated “It is finished” is “Tetelestai”
2. Tetelestai was used in legal proceedings to indicate a debt was no longer due and ultimately “Paid in Full”
3. Jesus once again identified God almighty as His Father
4. His final proclamation reveals His trust in God the Father
5. Jesus’ physical suffering was complete upon his death
Application
1. We are all going to cease suffering physically one day
2. We must put our faith and trust in the one who saves
3. By accepting this free gift of salvation and repenting, our sin debt is “PAID IN FULL”
4. In doing so, we are then adopted and claim God as Father
Prayer
"Lord Jesus, I repent of my sins and surrender my life.
I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. That he died on the cross for my sins and rose again on the third day.
I believe that in my heart and make confession with my mouth, that Jesus is my Savior and Lord.
